I feel the intent was for the central characters to mirror each other:
Snake Eyes begins the film so consumed with rage he ends up falling into with the very villains he sought. Storm Shadow is the noble warrior that offers him a new direction in life. By the end of the film, that has reversed- Snake Eyes has become a noble hero while Storm Shadow allowed his rage to consume him to the point he falls into working with the very foes he had sworn to fight. I don’t get the feeling that Storm Shadow was “exiled”. It looked to me that he was simply “demoted” from being in line to take charge…to being another member of the Clan. Again, echoing the “mirror” themes from above, Storm Shadow was told his whole life how important he was…only to be relegated to being “normal”. Conversely, Snake Eyes went from being a nobody, to being acknowledged as a person and warrior. It didn’t look to me that Tommy was exiled, he just got pissed off and said “Fuck y’all, I’m going to start my OWN ninja clan! With Blackjack! And hookers!” And that leaves Snake Eyes with a sense of guilt over things, given him agency to try and redeem himself over his actions. I’m not sure the crew were up to conveying these themes, but I feel there was an attempt to add that nuance to the relationship between the central characters. |

For those that liked the movie, are we supposed to accept a mask less talking Snake eyes going forward?

I've said my piece about the movie so I'll leave that alone.
What frustrates me even more than the movie, is the lack of any product on the shelves whatsoever. All year we have heard this nonsense about a big movie tie in. Lots of products. An entire section or endcap. There is literally fuck all out there right now. What a complete joke of a business model. I honestly don't know how they continue to fuck up this property so bad. It's clear at this point we don't need a media tie in to sell toys. There are no toys. They were all sold before the movie came around. I sincerely hope that's the one thing hasbro learns from this whole fiasco, but knowing them, they won't. |

This is his origin story, he speaks now but according to Golding and Bonaventura there are plans for him not to in the future. Which is perfectly fine because things happen in people's life, like there was a time I didn't have grey hair and now I do. It's good for the character to go through changes and I would love to see what happens to him going forward. I'm sure at this point the reason he loses his voice is because of SS.

Though we've never seen him speak in the cartoon or comics, I can imagine there was a time when he did speak.

Lots of interesting comments and reviews.
I can't believe I missed the Hama cameo, what scene was he in? I have been waiting curiously for a long time for this movie. Overall I liked it. I had some parts I liked and parts that I didn't, just like everyone else. The beginning scenes of taking on the Yakuza at the docks had a fun hollywood buddy cop vibe. Where they had a million swords stuck in th cab of the truck was wild and great. I thought the idea of being a double agent infiltrating the A Clan was very suprising, but I would have like some more scenes that showed SE regaining the clan's trust and also to show that the bonding moments between SE and SS were not total lies but SE regretted the deception. I know he was searching for SS at the end but I would have liked to see emphasis on the "sword brother bonding" grew outside a deceptive sham. I thought it interesting when you compare this SE movie with the Marvel Comic orgin, that in the comic it was SS that vowed vengance to find the identity of Uncle Hard Master's killer that was a Cobra agent, by infiltrating Cobra. And in the SE movie it was reversed, that SE was on the revenge vendetta of a Cobra agent that killed his father, so he inflitrated the A Clan. Nice reversal. I'm not a huge fan of the mystic rock and pure heart sensing snakes, but it makes sense that Cobra would seek any weapons of power mystic OR scientific. Thought the actors did the roles very well. I preferred Scrarlett's ending scene with Snake Eyes over some of her early scenes, I thought some were a little flat... Overall liked the movie. Liked the nods to Borovia and Colton. Thought it was an interesting take the Joe and Cobra have been feuding for atleast 20 years an interesting twist. It is definitely a different take to take a silent masked man of mystery and see what he's like before. If they did move advance the character to the tragic man of mystery, they could still have Henry G do flashbacks and linking scenes. Really liked the action sequences, however I have to agree there was some overuse of the StEaDy CaM. It was kinda crazy. Would like to see more of this version.
