Six-foot-two, eyes of blue. Duke is the man.

Just watched Revenge of Cobra. I was surprised how much they pushed Duke out of that storyline considering it was still 1984, the first year I believe he was carded. He basically got captured in episode 1 and almost disappeared for 3 episodes before escaping. Proportionally he appeared in season 1 a lot more I think. But his airtime in that felt more like his limited season 2 airtime.

Always liked both character Duke the more traditional & iconic one one, as for Flint his one of my favorite would love to see a new GI Joe series where him and Beachhead are the leader of GI Joe

Voted for Duke, but that might be my bias toward the figure. I still remember getting him in the mail.

Oh man this is a tough one, Duke is the stern leader but Flint has a certain panache going on with that beret and shotgun bandolier suspenders. Plus he was always half macking on Lady Jay in the cartoons.

Duke. I think i was 11 when the first 5 part show came on TV on Saturday morning and I was a Duke fan. When it became a series I always hoped for Duke but it seemed that Flint was usually the guy in charge and eventually he won me over and is one of my favorites, but the 11 year old me definitely wanted Duke to be the leader.

I'd give the edge to Flint now, just as a more nuanced character and due to my love of Flint + Lady Jaye. I'm a sucker for the GI Joe romances!
As a kid though, Duke was my first absolute MUST-HAVE figure, of those I initially missed out on. Duke feels like a throwback to a kind of 40s/50s ideal American soldier type, or the kind of hero you'd see on the front of old pulp magazines. With Duke you get more of a symbolic archetype; while with Flint, you get more of a character, though you lose some of the iconic attributes. I'll add this too--I think the Lady Jaye association helps Flint tremendously, because their interaction, aside from the overt romantic aspect, really allows you to imagine what Flint would be doing outside of the events of the storyline/plot. You know, he's got a life and interests outside the main plot. For Duke, this seems harder to imagine. Who would he be hanging with, what would he be doing, when the mission is over? Any of the Joes who have a good buddy on the team (LJ being a sort of ultimate buddy for Flint) benefits trememndously, in terms of character. Bazooka/Alpine/Quick Kick, Wetsuit/Leatherneck, SE/Scarlett, SE/Tommy, SE/Stalker, Rock n' Roll/Clutch, even Footloose/Dusty just in "Hearts and Cannons" are a hoot together. A character who on his own might be of middling interest to me, is sudden thrust way up in interest, when paired off with a best buddy.

Their personalities aside, Flint is just all-around cooler looking. Everything about his uniform set him apart. Duke, like General Hawk, had more of a vintage GI appearance (and nothing at all against that) but Flint seemed unique even among colorful Joes. I would say that only Beach-Head was a debatably cooler-looking figure than Flint.
