The replacement mechanism for the modern era Skystriker is a success. I printed a complete one today and installed it and everything works as it should. I'll get some pics posted another day.
Next, on to the process of creating a modified replacement to separate the gear controls from the wing sweep...

No time for photos today, but here are some renders of the straight replacement mechanism...

Latest customer print of the Indiana Jones map room:
Harsh direct sunlight today left lots of shadows. No time for a re-shoot though 'cause this baby needs to go out the door. For now, this will have to do to show the entire set all in one shot.

Is this a more accurate rendition to the actual set? I don't recall the Kenner one looking this nice

Thanks, yeah, I modeled this from scratch based on still frames from the movie. The scale is a lot of guesswork but I think it came out pretty well. It takes over a week to print all of the pieces and this is only the second "full set" I've ever made.

Thats looking nice
BTW, I gave away my Ender 3 Pro and went with the CR-10 S5. Basically like the ender but with dual-Z and 500x500x500 build space. Its been working great for large models

I've given serious thought to upgrading to a y-spliced hot-end to do 2-color printing as well, but the added weight from the second extruder would make a second z-stepper and rod almost a necessity, and by the time you upgrade the Ender with that, well...might as well consider a larger model, right? I just don't want to end up with a lumpy build plate and all the headaches that entails. Also, does the CR-10 S5 offer a removable magnetic build surface like the Ender 3? I've really grown attached to that feature and not having to fight with glass beds, adhesives, etc.

There have been some major advancements in my upgrade for the wing sweep and landing gear mechanism for the 30th Anniversary mold of the Skystriker. I have some refinements to make still, but the basic design works now.
Here are some comparison pictures with the original factory piece (in black, with the handle snapped off) and my latest prototype of the upgraded mechanical piece that allows independent control of the wings and gear: There was a lot less space to work with in this modern-era version, and the designers made it a lot tougher to add what I needed just due to placement of internal support fins inside the shell so the design had to be a lot different from my vintage Skystriker upgraded mechanism, unfortunately. Thankfully, it is still a lot like the design for the vintage Skystriker in the sense that it is made up of three parts that can be swapped in and out of the Skystriker at will without any permanent modification to the plane...except for the initial disassembly of the Skystriker itself in the case of the 30th Anniversary mold. It's factory glued together in two locations so breaking loose the glue is the only permanent modification required. After that, it's a free-for-all. Here's the design: The main mechanism still works like the original and is operated by the handle on top of the plane, but the wing synchronizer piece is able to pass freely along the top of the mechanism to move the wings independently of the landing gear (but still in synch with the other wing). Here, the landing gear is in the up position and the wings would be in the swept position just like the way the original mechanism would work: And here, the gear is still up but the wings would now be in the forward position which was previously not possible to do: And here we are with gear down and wings spread like usual: And now with gear down and the wings swept, which was previously impossible to do: It's a bit easier to show off when it's all together, but then you can't see the mechanism that makes it all happen:

I accidentally printed a TFA Millennium Falcon dish with a thicker layer height than I normally use and didn't realize it until I had mailed it to the buyer (whoopsie!) because other stuff I was prepping to print was taking far less estimated print time than I'm used to so I checked my settings and figured out that I screwed up my last print. So I reprinted the item in the correct layer height and then printed another one in the thicker layer height just to see how much detail is lost as a result of using thicker layers. I assume the version on the right is pretty much what I shipped to my buyer originally. The buyer will now be receiving the corrected print on the left at 0.1mm layer height, but I thought some people might like to see what a difference it makes when a seller skimps on layer height resolution to save on print time. So, here are some comparison pics:
Same printer, same nozzle, same filament, same model, same support settings. The only difference was layer height and about twice as much printer time to get the results on the left. It's hard to tell much of a difference in some areas, but in others the 0.2mm layer height print's finer details almost look out of focus even though it's on the same focal plane as the 0.1mm layer height print. In some views you can see distinct "stair stepping" on the mounting bracket arms on the 0.2mm print. Print lines are more visible in the 0.2mm print. From 10 feet away, they're pretty interchangeable, sure. Get up close though, and you really need to spend the extra print time on the thinner layers.

I'd LOVE to have that much build space. Is it hard to find a good/flat build plate though? I've heard that the larger the build plate, the harder it is to get a plate with no warping, dips, etc.

I've been looking and so far the CR10-5S only has glass which is a pain and you have to hold it in place with paper clips. So its good in some ways but some draw backs.
