This movie is going to bomb. Definitely not going to pay money to see this in a theater. There's nothing in this trailer that pays homage to the the comics which, thought I loved the cartoon as a kid, are the gold standard. In fact, I don't see any of Larry Hama's story in here other than the character/organization names. Not seeing Hama's consulting shine through in any way.
Doesn't help that They're marketing the film as a Fast-type flick. F9 will most certainly be a much more high adrenaline Bay-esque thrill ride. Good martial arts scenes loaded with well timed practical effects and a decent story will need to be it's strong point. Last edited by Mega Convoy; 06-21-2021 at 10:30 PM.. |

If anyone knows GI Joe these days, it's from the cartoon. End of story. And as such SE is pretty much a blank slate that they can do what they want with. It's a smaller scale version of the Darkseid / Thanos thing. |

Okay for anyone wondering about the relationship between Hama, Marvel, and Hasbro - it goes like this.
Hasbro had let GiJoe go away for a few years. After the Vietnam War made their military doll unpopular, they had rebranded him as an adventure hero for a number of years, then let the toy line lapse. As we all know, in the early 80s they wanted to capitalize on the popularity of the Star Wars toys and relaunch as our beloved 3-3/4 size line. The concept was invented of having a toy line advertised by both a comic book and a cartoon. They brought the comic to Marvel who accepted the pitch, then they struggled to find a writer because nobody wanted to have a lame-duck "toyline" licensed job and risk their career. Larry stepped up to do it, because he had been trying to be a writer for years instead of being an editor and everybody told him he couldn't switch jobs. "Editors don't know how to be writers" or basically something like that. So they told him what the story was going to be and he was like "who are your bad guys?" And Hasbro was like "bad guys? What's that?" So Larry told them they need to fight someone like Hydra, maybe call them Cobra instead. And he dusted off an old script he had written for an Agents of Shield comic book some time before, and adapted that. He forced Hasbro to make up Cobra. Quickly he was in charge of a lot of the storyline overall. The toy designers were making the figures without any input from Hama. They were like "here is a bazooka soldier, here is a commando." And he convinced Hasbro to let him write a military dossier for each figure and to put it on the back of the card. So they let him do that. He was taking identity-free characters and inventing their stories. The Marvel comic became a huge hit. Larry had a lot of freedom to do what he wanted, however it was intended as a toy commercial and he did have to insert certain characters and vehicles as new toys hit the aisles. Some of them he really liked and got strong character arcs, others such as Serpentor were just dreamed up and inserted into the storyline without any forshadowing or plot development, just "here he is." Notably, some of the real stinkers like Cobra-La never appeared because Larry DID have enough power in the relationship by that point to just say "no way man." So Larry is in a very real way the creator of ARAH, although the designs for new characters were conceived of and given to him by Hasbro. I don't know anything about the cartoons except that I think they were going off of the character descriptions from the file cards and kind of doing their own thing.

I think the trailer looks interesting so far. It's funny to be reacquainted with G.I. Joe after such a long absence on my part. After growing out of Joes when i turned about 12 or so which was around 1990 and not getting back into them until the release of Classified, I can definitely see how people really get attached to the past.
It seems a good number of people on this forum want the movie to represent what they had growing up whether that was the comic or the cartoon or even their own strange head canon. But they aren't making the movie strictly for us. The movie is rated PG-13, not R. Its trying to appeal to us partly sure, but it's also trying to appeal to as broad of an audience as possible as well. It wants to get kids more involved in the line, hence the proliferation of toys (retro, classified, children's line) and also cross marketing with Fortnite. If people don't want to see the movie, thats their prerogative, but don't act like it's trash or ruining something that it really isn't. And for the people who claim the movie is "woke" or any other such b.s., you are deluding yourself if you really think Larry Hama, an Asian American, wasn't forced to make Snake Eyes a caucasian person. It was the early 80s and we all know that there was no way Hasbro was going to let him create the face of the comic be someone that was a person of color. Personally, as a caucasian myself, I find it refreshing to see a person of color be Snake Eyes. The whole idea that a caucasian should take over a Japanese martial arts empire is a tired and frankly annoying trope that needs to end. We had a million movies of that in the 80s and it doesn't come off well in today's reflection of our society (nor did it ever). And if you haven't seen Úrsula Corberó in Money Heist, than you should definitely check her out as she's amazing in that show and can't wait to see how she'll play the Baroness. I love the cartoon and my old school ARAH Joes, but am also willing to see some changes and differences as well. Would be nice to see some more positivity overall in the Joe community. Strangely enough one of the reasons I loved the ARAH line was the diversity of the figures that i felt represented the people that I grew up with. |

However, Larry DID have Storm Shadow go on a redemptive arc towards being a good guy because he was upset that the only Asian in the toy line (at that time at least) was a bad guy and a ninja stereotype. This change LOSES diversity, reinforces racial stereotypes, and it has excluded Stalker completely. However (and this topic has been beat into the dust so deeply at this point on this forum) this version of Snake-Eyes can still be portrayed as an outsider to the Arashikage Clan which is important to the character. It's not, like, the only important thing about him but it might be the only remaining part of the character to make the leap to this version. Otherwise, the 80s Snake-Eyes doesn't appear to be in the film. I am glad you found your way back to GiJoe! Úrsula Corberó looks great!

So I'll start. Best recent martial arts movie I've seen (by far) is "Shadow" from 2018. Worst is "Jiu Jitsu" (2020).

People really lose me when they go on the anti-woke and anti-SJW tangents. It's just tiresome.
When you get right down to it, do you all know what woke really means? I mean I find the term annoying, but what woke really means is awareness of social issues. That's it. Being aware of social issues or issues that plague society, and there are plenty of them, is not a crime. And believe it or not, if you hate being woke, a lot of our favorite movies and TV shows have expressed "woke" views for years. Look at the Filmation Masters of the Universe cartoon. Every week, He-Man and his friends deliver some sort of moral message about treating people with respect, not judging people because they look different, things like that. Is that not woke messaging? It's essentially a veiled way of teaching kids not to be prejudiced or racist. So was 1980s He-Man woke? By the very definition of what woke means, yes it arguably was. Do you hate He-Man and Masters of the Universe now because of that? Do any of you even know how the final issue of Marvel's GI Joe comic ended? Snake Eyes receives a letter from an old war buddy whose son wants to join the military. In the letter, Sean expresses that he wants achieve glory and adventure by enlisting. Snake Eyes then writes an honest and candid letter back to this kid writing about the harsh realities of being a soldier and part of the military. Is this not a social issue? The horrors of war and the harsh realities that soldiers have to face? Snake Eyes in his own words explains there's no glory in war or parties and there's inhumanity to it, but he also expresses there can be honor, dignity, bravery, and compassion. Snake Eyes also expresses that despite everything he's lost and given for his life in the military, he has no regrets. I'm sorry but that's powerful. But you can also argue that's social awareness and messaging and WOKE. There are no big action scenes or cool vehicles. It's a soldier who has given his life to the military offering a young boy his honest thoughts and feelings about serving. That's the GI Joe Larry Hama created I think when people complain about "woke" what they really mean is they feel that the things they love are being attacked and treated as lesser by liberal progressives. They feel what they loved is being attacked and mistreated. "Well, this thing was a product of its time, so we're going to fix it and modernize it." I think people also get angry when clickbait journalists or so-called intellectuals try to deconstruct or attack beloved IPs and assign malicious intent where none was truly intended. And you know, I get things like GI Joe being sacred to us. As far as Henry Golding playing Snake Eyes, what's more important to me are his backstory and where he came from, how he gets injured and permanently scarred and loses his voice. So, if they throw out the military and lost family aspects, I will be disappointed. I know this is an origin story, but if we're going wait like 2 hours just to get like 2 minutes of a scarred, mute Snake Eyes, I will be disappointed. The previous movies already jettisoned his superior origin story, along with his romance with Scarlett, and I didn't care for that either. He didn't talk because of that vow of silence BS because his master was murdered. As far this movie goes, none of the trailers or footage have been all that inspiring to me. It looks fairly generic. Very little of Snake Eyes actually being Snake Eyes. Why does an organization of ninjas care about distributing justice to the world? Snake Eyes' origin looks like a carbon copy of Cole Turner from that awful Mortal Kombat movie. They created a new, original character to be the center of the story and it was awful. This looks very much of the same. I don't think the people working on this franchise truly like or understand GI Joe. |
