I think most GI Joe fans would agree. Unfortunately, Hasbro just doesn't get it. Hasbro needs to ram 1 character down our throats. They don't understand what the words "team" or "group" mean.
Imagine if Hasbro had a baseball or football team. They would put all their time & energy into training 1 player & then wonder why they lost every single game. Last edited by Infinitum; 06-17-2021 at 04:27 PM.. |

Even if they stayed true to the source material, by a few changed, it likely would have no impact on the movies performance.
The old fandom was never gonna make this movie a success, they have to evolve and bring in new fans and attract a world wide audience to succeed. A movie for only US centric males in their late 40s-50s was never gonna take off for a franchise anymore. The IP has to change. GI Joe has changed central aspects of their characters over and over again in the past 40 years, folks were upset when GI Joe stopped being adventure centric 12" dolls and turned into what we got with ARAH. Everything changes, some fans need to learn to let go. Yes. Joe needs new fans. But I'm gonna argue it won't survive without some of the old ones. Hopefully, this movie makes some new kids excited for Joe. That'd be the only upside, to me. |

The reality is this:
The "core collectors" of GI Joe are aging out, much as 12" collectors did about a decade ago. In order for GI Joe to stay a relevant, profitable, brand, it may well require a move away from established products and themes. Hasbro wants Snake Eyes to be a successful because it will lift the ENTIRE brand. GI Joe is not a thriving brand, and a successful film to move the brand outside the collector only crowd is a GOOD THING. Even if YOU (in general) don't get the exact toys you want. Transformers fans have benefitted HANDSOMELY by the success of the live action films, even if most films were varying degrees of terrible and fans didn't like the direction that was often taken with said movies (be it plot or character representations). It DOES NOT MATTER if you like the movie or not. IT DOES NOT MATTER if you buy any of the toys (but I suspect more than a few will). WHAT DOES MATTER is that the film is successful enough for Hasbro to expand the brand, which nominally means more stuff for us. And speaking as a cartoon guy, I'm glad they're doing something different with Snake Eyes. He's a core character, but NOTHING outside of the comics has ever justified his importance. The film, if nothing else, is an honest stab at making people actually care about the character outside of "cool masked, black-garbed, ninja guy", so I have to at least give them a chance.

I know Baroness doesn't have her normal look (specifically the hair) but she is stunning all the same. Not sure I will be able to get used to SE being unmasked and speaking though, just seems like a completely diff character.

I've heard that song more than enough times already, but the trailer looks good. Actually finally hyped for the film.
