Thanks! Definitely helps to shift focus more on what you have than what you don’t, especially when there are so few definitive needs left. A lot of loose figures that I’d still like to get, especially when found for good prices, but the bigger stuff, pretty content with what I have. Maybe when the displays are all done, then I’ll splurge on a larger playset or vehicle but probably smaller stuff for now. I’m with you on paying a little more for quality too. Some Joe’s with cool accessories who I never had, when I’m back at shows, I’ll spend a few dollars more to get them complete than just buying them loose from a bin.
In the same boat, originally with vintage I was going for the stuff I never had, now I’m picking up some more of those but replacing a few guys that were lost over the years as well. Keeps hunting fun since it means you can usually find something worth grabbing but also not coming home with bags & bags of stuff. Haha, those days were fun but just less space to enjoy the large hauls now. ————— I agree on he Vintage line as well. Been mostly getting some for customs, outside of Roadblock & Scarlett who I just loved right out of the package. Vintage built Joes of characters I don’t have would have been hard to pass, especially when I saw myself buy a few Retro collection guys for Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Transformers and MOTU. Positive for me is it saves some space & money because Hasbro rereleasing the OG13 in o ring would have been an easy 13 x $xx.xx right out of my pocket. Haha. |

I'd love some of the larger play sets too, but tbh, I just don't have the space to house a Terror Drome, so even if I could pick something like that up, I wouldn't even be able to enjoy it properly... ah, maybe one day. Saving money is the upside of Hasbro not coming out with an o-ring money, but I still hope they come out with them at some point. OG13 would be cool, as I actually don't have any of them. I didn't get into the line until the late 80s. I would really like a Scarlett V1 at some point if I get a good deal, but her prices have shot up. I do have a Scarlett v3 from 2003 which is pretty nice, but not the same as the V1 figure. There always seems to be something to get.
At some point I’ll probably grab that 2003 or the 97 version to have an original Scarlett mold. Those late 90’s, 2000’s and Black Major customs are great options for the figures who are just too pricy or fragile for you to buy & mess with the original releases. I did that with Starduster so I had one I could pose a bit without fear of breaking something. Never noticed that when doing my deep dives on YoJoe. Scarlett is one I made of custom of too so surprised I didn’t see her count being off. Funny thing to hear.

IMO, this stuff is irritating when the figures are clearly the same character. It gets really messy when you get into the '90s and '00s when Hasbro lost the original trademarks and had to rename characters left and right: General Tomahawk, Thunderwing, Double Clutch, and so forth. |

Yeah, the space commitment and just how few figures some of the larger Joe stuff held are the reasons why I haven’t gone all out towards getting some of them. Once my displays are set, then I’ll probably rank them by preference and maybe look into hunting for one again. Almost had a Flagg and a MCC at a toy show but the seller just didn’t want to make a deal. Pretty sure they didn’t sell a thing that day because everything I looked at first hour of the show was still there when people were packing back up. Saved me room to work on displaying my other stuff without that being in the way so a blessing I guess.

Circling back to the original question. Someone mentioned "guess you can never tell what will be popular in the future". I'd argue that in some instances, yes, you can. For example, if you've wanted a carded O-ring Flint, without paying a fortune for the original, it might be now or never to grab the Funskool version at an affordable price. He can currently be had for about $45, but I can see him going for over $100 in the very near future. Road Pig is another one I could see climbing in price. Night Viper has been an underrated army builder, and I could see him shooting up in price as well. Just a few I thought I'd mention.

Especially the '00s stuff, specifically in regards to thumbs- they finally had that figured out with that softer plastic ... unfortunately, waists are another matter, but that generally came down to poor parts choices when frankensteining them together.

YoJoe does that for any character name change. So, Hawk restarts at v1 when he became General Hawk in 1991. Falcon is v1 in 1987 and again in 1988 when he was named Lt. Falcon. Etc.

Once we get into the 2000’s I just start going by release year to reference them because some guys really exploded in releases by that point. Quote:
It's strange that a dealer at a toy show was not willing to deal, especially considering the competition they have that these locations. I passed on some stuff in one collectables store, because the guy wasn't willing to budge on a price even though I was going to buy a lot, and the prices were not competitive for the time in the least... which was a strange experience since most collectables stores I've been to have been great about giving deals if you're buying multiple expensive items from them, and they know you're a collector that's likely to return. The guy at that one store was also pretty lazy (said he had stuff, but couldn't be bothered to go in the back to look for it) and aloof. Fast forward a few years later, that guy has since closed his store, while all the other collectable stores in the area have stayed open... I'd have to imagine that he lost his business from how he ran it, and this was pre pandemic.
Agreed, the 90s, 2000s, Black Major stuff are a great option for people worried about the fragility of their vintage figures. A lot of our dealers are really good, just fans of toys & stuff and they’ll work with you. We BS with a lot of the regulars so there are people I go out of my way to try and just grab something from. So a lot of times we find good deals just by being friendly with people. These guys just wanted to take their toys back home with them. Haha. I had $700 worth of stuff picked out and was just looking for any wiggle room, best I got was “I’ll help you carry the Flagg to your car.” It happens though, ended up buying a third party MP Perceptor that day which led to a great relationship with a local Transformer dealer who I bought a ton of stuff from over the next few years so it always works out. Never saw the FLAGG dealer at any shows again so think they were a one and done when they realized they really had no interest in parting with anything.

Even that's complicated by characters like Firefly and Mirage who got multiple releases the same year. Counting the "New Sculpt" junk, Snake Eyes had five releases in 2002 alone, the same in 2004, and six of them in 2005.
