Just about all of the tabs are prone to breakage, especially the ones found on the softer plastic parts such as the cell walls and all of the guns/etc. that clip to the walls. The wall tabs themselves aren't as bad, but still something to keep an eye out for. Even so, it's a much better display piece than the '92- I'd go with it first if you can.

The tabs on the machine guns, cameras, and searchlights that clip to the walls are the most fragile. I've already had to replace some since I got it. But hey, it's 38 years old! In addition, take a good look at the tabs on the walls and stockade walls too. Also check out the handles on the laser cannon where the Joes would hold it. |

I made my decision as to what I wanted to get, and the '83 Headquarters won out(because I couldn't win/find a decently priced complete Night Raven). I found one on Ebay that was complete with blueprints and no broken tabs that I could see for $149.99. So there are some good deals for it out there. Waiting for it to arrive to add another fuzzy haul picture. I think I'm going to agree with everyone as well, it just looks better than the '92 one. The '92 one looks rather cheap honestly.

I was very fortunate to get the 1983 Headquarters Command Center last year with the box and blueprints!

Side note - All the extra storage makes for a good spot to put sets complete sets of the '83 and '84 battle gear. Last edited by Cryoguns; 05-11-2021 at 11:49 AM.. |

The 83 HQ you got sounds like a steal! Part of me really wants to get a version of each to setup a large GI joe base complex but it’s looking like it would be an expensive endeavor. I’ll have to keep an eye out though for HQs in good condition. |

The 1992 HQ was the one I had as a kid. I don’t think it was cheaply made or constructed. It’s a different design for sure but certainly has its own merits. The 2001 version that replaced the brighter colors with the browns/tans looks great but it’s really skyrocketed in price.

I was also thinking about getting all the different versions of GI Joe head quarters over the years, and combining them into a massive display. Unfortunately, the amount of room that would take up is insane. For a while I had my rolling thunder and 92 head quarters combined into one large compound, and it took up an entire shelf that was 4 feet long and 2 feet wide. I had a chance at a near complete V1 HQ a couple years ago for $55 shipped, regret passing that up. About 4 years ago had a shot at the Mobile command center for about that same price and regret passing it up also.

I made a roof for my jail out of a clear take-out container. The idea that prisoners could easily climb over the walls to escape always seemed ridiculous to me. |

I have had a harder time finding undamaged camera and laser clips than anything else on this set. As far as superior between 83 and 92...IDK as both have such a huge variety of play features. The 83 has all these cut outs for the various guns and missile launchers that really showed how well thought from an interactive and playability standpoint they wanted the line to be when it first launched. |

It is crazy how prices have shot up over the past year. I remember seeing the '83 HQ for $100 and less just six months ago, and now it's nearly doubled in price. The '92 HQ is a bit cheaper however. I was watching a listing of a mostly complete one in good shape and I should have bid on it, because it sold for only $25($60 shipping though....). So if you are tight for money, it is the better option. |
