Come to think of it in hindsight, for Cobra to grow that much over the years, GI Joe must have really sucked at their job.

Hot take: I don't like how 'overpowered' the Baroness character has been depicted in modern GI Joe writing (the past 15 years).

I haven't been active much lately, but this issue "inspired" me to one last time put into words the state of ARAH in 2021.
Every time I think the title has already reached a nadir in quality, an issue like this comes along to open my eyes. If you're going to do a story that mines 35 year old continuity, is it truly too much to ask that you actually read, or even skim, the actual issues in question? This issue has the dubious distinction of not only getting the character personalities and dynamics 100% wrong, but actually portraying them as 180 degrees of what they should be. Baroness, the person who specializes in gunning down unarmed victims, is now horrified at the thought of it. Baroness and Bludd, two long-term allies, take a little detour trying to kill each other, before neatly easing back to their old dynamic in the actual continuity? Bludd pretending he's in better standing than Baroness with the man who threw him behind bars? Add to that half of the characters and equipment making an appearance not being around yet in this era, and it's hard to see how this issue could have been a bigger failure even if you deliberately tried to get things as wrong as possible. Larry Hama has reached a level that goes beyond just normal hackwork. I have never ever seen a supposedly legitimate comic book writer put so little care into his craft. We've gone from a continuity error here and there to just about every single character being accidentally resurrected to now this shocking admission of incompetence. What we're seeing goes beyond plain bad quality or low effort into a level where a writer is just not capable of doing this job anymore. This is comparable to a a cook burning down dinner or a mailman dropping his mail in a river. I'm beyond hearing excuses like "everything is a retcon" or "making it up as I go along". If this is your level of care when it comes to the source material than you're just flat out unqualified to write continued stories. I get that Hama's probably being paid peanuts for writing this stuff, and you get what you pay for, but you can you really put a price on your reputation as a writer? Can you put a price on your dignity? I would be ashamed to have my name associated with this absolutely cataclysmic failure. By this point Hama the writer has had a booger on his nose for years, and there's no one around with the backbone to tell him that. The credits say this title has an editor to it, but at this point I'm suspecting that's just a mix-up in the copy. This is not just an insult to the readers. This is an insult to the readers, the company, the artist, comic books as a medium, and most importantly, this is an insult to yourself. Shame on you, Larry Hama. Shame on you, Tom Waltz.

A Real American Hero, typically referring to the era of GI Joe ranging from 1982 - 1994
