I had to pick up some groceries this evening. Before I did that I stopped in the Target next door to the grocery store. Nothing on the shelves, they were all bare except a few McFarlane Batman, a few animated type looking smaller Transformers, Peter B Parker, one Fig of a character from Shang Chi was there (so that wave must have been there), no Star Wars at all, and only a couple he man and Skelator.
However I did take the picture of the barcode from Major Bludd and scan it and it came up as the pic below, no real info just that the barcode is good. The bottom of the pic which is fuzzy, that was the DCPI .

Man, for a bunch of collectors a whole lotta people here seem really ignorant of some of the details of the toy production process and exclusivity agreements.
1. Hasbro can't just shit out action figures at a moment's notice. It's only been at best a couple months since Vipers were in stores. It takes a minimum of about 4 or 5 months to do a production run, and that assumes there's an opening on the factory schedule that isn't being taken up by a higher-priority line/assortment or another company altogether. What went up on Hasbro Pulse today was clearly a tiny amount, and they likely had to get permission from Target to even sell those. If I had to guess, I'd imagine they were "customer service stock." How long was it between Cobra Trooper and Cobra Infantry? Or between the unveiling of Regal Cobra Commander and delivery (and those may well be anomalies because Cobra Commander was already in production at the time and they just needed to do another paint master, and the Cobra Infantry may have been planned before the Cobra Trooper even hit stores). Either way at a MINIMUM that's the amount of time you have to look at before you could have larger numbers of Vipers showing up anywhere, and it may well be even more. Hasbro literally COULD NOT "just produce more" of the Vipers for themselves (or anyone but Target) to sell, because they're an exclusive. That's part of what being an exclusive means. There's likely a time period that has to pass before Hasbro can release a non-exclusive version, and while they were probably already warehousing tons of Snake-Eyes movie figures, they likely didn't want to warehouse a glut of Cobra Vipers that they'd have to wait months to sell. Storage costs money. 2. Contrary to popular belief, Hasbro isn't run by complete idiots. Vipers will be back. Maybe not EXACTLY the same as the Cobra Island versions but no more difference than the Cobra Infantry and Cobra Trooper (if that). Same with Beachhead and Firefly and Major Bludd and Baroness. We might have to wait a year or two for some of them (I doubt Hasbro wants to have movie-Baroness and non-Movie Baroness on the pegs at the same time if they can avoid it...which is also why I suspect we haven't gotten a "main costume" Storm Shadow in the Classified line yet), and they may have minor differences when they arrive, but Hasbro ain't exactly in the business of only using molds once. But the key point here is that it takes TIME. And yes, the movie release is probably disrupting that schedule some. I'd still expect that we start to see more "classic-inspired" stuff in the Holiday season, probably alongside the later couple movie figs. I know we all want our fix but patience pays off. Then again as I've noted a couple times before: Generally when GI Joe reaches the point where it's "meeting demand" the line starts to wither on the vine. |

Stepped away for a few hours:
a) absolutely great image (and even better fortune) firmpulse! b) was there a street date for Bludd confirmed? c) Pulse Premium, at a *bare* minimum, should guarantee the *opportunity* to order any Hasbro figure. $50 for a scant-at-best chance at something we already had a scant-at-best chance to get makes me want to take a swing on someone. I haven't bought Premium and I can't imagine I ever will, but if you pay for $50 that I won't, you deserve that shot 100%. Paying $50 for a 3% chance at best is profoundly fucking insulting. d) To Jmacq1's point above me, two figures in the line (Regal Cobra Commander and Snake Supreme Cobra Commander) were both released as preorder, pre-manufacture options via Hasbro Pulse. The wait was longer, but the whole operation was smooth and guaranteed anyone who wanted one the option to buy a figure. Hasbro has created a precedent, and not offering to do so for figures that already have print runs too low to sate demand is bad for the bottom line and bad for consumer satisfaction/morale.

Google tells me there were 1,897 stores in the U.S. in 2020. In every store gets 6, that means there will be 11, 382 available.
Pulse is supposed to have 10% (wasn’t that the number they said for retail partner exclusives?), so that would be another 1,138. Assuming all of that is true, there should be 12,520 up for grabs in the U.S. I don’t know if that makes me feel better or worse. He’s not an army builder, so I assume most fans won’t need multiples. However, I only ever saw Firefly once. |

They can't do that with a TARGET exclusive unless Target lets them out of whatever exclusivity window was agreed to in the contract. Doesn't matter how much it hurts "consumer satisfaction/morale" because it'd cost Hasbro a lot more in breach of contract lawsuit fees and potentially lost business if they just thumbed their nose at one of their biggest retail partners and started selling all their exclusives in unlimited numbers. I've seen rumorposting of anything from 2%-10% but nothing confirmed by Hasbro that I can recall (though if someone can point us to something that says otherwise, that'd certainly be illuminating). Either way the Partner Exclusives didn't go up until March, which likely means the Vipers weren't initially included, as they had released prior to that IIRC (and if they had a stock to sell back then Hasbro Pulse probably would have put it up sooner rather than later). I suspect whatever went up for sale today was either something that got held up in customs because of pandemic-related backlogs or "customer service stock" that they got permission from Target to sell. I stopped by my Target this evening to check for that MOTU set. When I walked up to the door there were several people camped out and this was around 7:00PM. With actual camping gear. I have never seen that before at any Target in my area. There were signs up all over the place and the signs said something to the effect of "To keep our employees safe we are only giving out Pokemon cards Fridays at 8:00AM." So WTF?! I think I was too old for Pokemon so I don't know anything about it. Their cards are still a thing? Still a thing where people are camping out for them 12+ hours overnight in advance?
To me this shows we G.I. Joe collectors are not the worst. I am guessing something must have happened involving the safety of some Target people and people are crazy enough to camp out for cards? I don't think a Joe collector has done that yet. Just kind of surprised by this. |

Nobody here has seen these contracts, so anything we say about what Hasbro can/not do with a contract is pure speculation.
What we do know is that this relationship currently reflects poorly on both Hasbro and Target, and it is in their best interests to try to make good to consumers. You know what would make me stop thinking twice about shopping at Target? Target and Hasbro issuing a press release saying (in so many words) "Wow we're as surprised as you are at how excited customers are for these products so we're gonna work with Hasbro to make sure you have a chance to buy them via Pulse!" It's not going to make Target $20 right now, but it's going to mean I don't avoid Target when I need to run out and get a few things. Every time I tell my wife "hey, I'm running some errands and going to Target" my expectation to spend $20 turns into $80. Every dang time. Shoe polish? Oh shit I need some. And boxers, oh right! Orange juice, paper towels, and a new dog leash! When that urge happens now, I don't purchase from Target. Penny wise, pound foolish. But, yeah, to your original point, unless you can quote directly from the contract b/w Hasbro and Target, don't speak on them as a matter of fact. The Pulse exclusives today shows there's *some* wiggle room to take advantage of. Huh. Dang, I'm working the polls all day (6AM-8PM) for election day. At least the $ we earn for working is fun discretionary $$$ that I can use to secure one from eBay, ha! :(
