This all sounds like an elaborate plot by Cobra. ;-)

Maybe so, but at least we're tracking the timeline of COBRA's dastardly deed.
1987 Super Trooper is named Virgil M. Carmody by Larry Hama. 1987 Super Trooper is renamed Paul Latimer by somebody at Hasbro in USA. 1988 Super Trooper is renamed Top Secret by somebody at Hasbro in UK. 1989 Super Trooper is renamed Joe De Niro by comic writer Steve Alan in UK. So now we know when, where, and some of who was involved, but I wish we knew the why of it all. There's probably more to this story than we know. An elaborate COBRA plot indeed...

By far one of my least favorite Joes of all time. I thought the head sculpt made him look like an idiot, and the shirt underneath the armor looked like he hung out in the swamp or something. I don't get the appeal of this figure at all.

All else I can chip in is that, AFAIK, there were few "Action Force" commercials on TV after 1988. There were some for the Pallitoy product in ~1983. (Though I never saw them), there were ads in 1987 for the relaunched Hasbro-style packaged GI Joe stuff, AF/Joe never aired on TV as a cartoon series AFAIK. Likely owing to changes to the UK law effectively banning toylines becoming cartoons. (Cartoon, then toy, not vice-versa)
Aside: Transformers was aired for a period, on "Wacaday" on ITV in school holidays c.1985, it was then pulled and only released as episodes on VHS. Wacaday replaced Transformers with Gobots cartoons, which were followed by the toys being released. The GI Joe cartoon, along with its hilariously bad dubbing of "Action Force" and "Full Force!", was only released on VHS. AFAIK, post 1988, the toys weren't advertised on TV. Super Trooper was only advertised via the comic story in AFM or via an in-pack flyer afaik. By contrast, "Special Corps", or Steel Brigade rather, was repeatedly advertised in the UK Transformers comic which the reprints of GI Joe comics had been folded into in 1988. |

I loved his Action Force introduction and how he was the last one in the Super Trooper program. He is one that I still want to eventually make a modern version of for my collection.
I never had him as a kid, but I did have Rapid Fire. I did eventually get him as an adult though but sold him when I sold my vintage collection.

I never had him as a kid, but I did have Rapid Fire. I did eventually get him as an adult though but sold him when I sold my vintage collection. Much in the way that Super Trooper was meant as a compliment to Paul Latimer, Rapid Fire comes across to me as an embarrassing kiss ass attempt to serenade the new DIC executive and partner to Hasbro, Robby London, so they put his name on the action figure's file card. I can just imagine him reading his misspelled name on the product (because they accidentally typed Robbie London). Then, rather than have Larry Hama whip up another file card, they plagiarize his Super Trooper dossier by changing just a few sentences here and there across the file card. If Paul Latimer is an O-2, then Robbie London is an O-3. If Paul Latimer's class required fluency in three languages, airborne qualification, and earning the Expert Infantryman Badge, than Robbie London's class required every soldier to have done the same, but instead of the EIB, they have to have received the Medal of Honor! Rapid Fire is mentioned to have made it to West Point the same way as Super Trooper, but it says that he completed Cadet Summer Orientation in only five weeks instead of ten (although I think West Point might be running the orientation in a span of three to four weeks time). How many G.I. Joe collectors have had to wash their eyes with bleach after reading that file card?

See, while Super Trooper at least had that cool factor with the vac-metal, Rapid-Fire had garish neon green that made him one of the stinkers of the OG 3.75" line.
And I remember even as a kid reading his filecard and while I didn't realize he "one-upped" Super-Trooper like that I do recall going "Wait isn't this just Super Trooper?" |
