What is everyone else's take/theory or does anyone know the official reason for the dramatic change between the 1990 and 1991 release years for vehicles? I'd argue that the 1990 vehicle releases is either the third or 4th best year in the whole vintage run.
Just seeing the stark changes in design, gimmicks, construction and colors used all in one year is a pretty big shift. Not to say that I think the 1991 vehicles are bad - I like pretty much all of them but in some ways it feels like a different Joe-verse. Were there changes as Hasbro within the Joe design team between those two years? Or was it just a case of Hasbro just trying to stay with the times (ie. it was the 90s)? |

A lot changed in that 90-91 era. Everything became neon and eco activism took root ala Capt Planet. Even though Desert Shield/Storm was going on, kids toys had shifted from military to more eco, fantasy, cartoon and video game based. The change was really sudden and noticeable to me at the time.
I was winding down in 1990 with my last vehicle purchases....Figures I would stop collecting all together in 91. I remember feeling that the entire line had jumped off the rails after the 88-89 era space theme and I was getting more interested in outdoor activities & girls anyways. |

3DJoes.com has some fascinating interviews with the creators!
Check out Kirk Bozigian's page, and in particular, the interviews in the section "The 1990s: Evolving the Brand (1991-1994)". https://www.3djoes.com/kirk-bozigian.html If I remember correctly, Kirk Bozigian said all the vehicles before 1991 were more like model kits. For the 1990's, they wanted more action features to compete with other 1990's brands. Last edited by LockOn; 03-08-2021 at 04:29 AM.. |

I had to go to Yojoe and look around because I couldn't remember ANY of the later vehicles. I think 1988 was the last great year for vehicles, even though we had some good figures well after that. I kind of stopped buying them after 1985 but still bought figures until the end.

It was more the Kenner merger and internal politics at Hasbro that killed the ARAH line. Not really trying to get into that whole debate though. I was just more curious about the drastic jump between 1990 and 1991. |

That being said, yes - I know exactly what the OP meant about the sharp divergence from 1990 into 1991. 1991 went crazy with spring loaded launchers, chunky/abstract designs, and neon colors. |

There were a lot of neon coloured toys / accessories / figures in garish colours (Ninja Turtles, Captain Planet, Bucky O'Hare etc) around that time...Hasbro (stupidly) decided to apply that conceit to the Joe line...also, I notice the line was becoming cheaper in terms of parts used and action features...a real shame, cost counting ruined a once great toy line / brand like G.I.JOE...Yes, the previous year in the line was their last true hurrah...

The big year mentioned before was 1993, owing to a huge volume of product options. I think sf1378 is also alluding to this same point.

1993's massive slate was a result of the strong sales of 1992. I'd even argue the many repaints added to the Battle Corps line were an attempt to pad out the assortment.
