I get that often, even when I price high end collectibles for very fair prices. Usually their offer is a little higher than the Auction opening price , so I just let them know that they are welcome to bid on the item and they might even get it for less than their offer and make up some story about having received better offers anyway. Note, none of them ever bid.

If I've ever messaged someone offering to buy now, I offer the seller the listed opening auction price, i.e. £10, £14.99 etc (plus postage) if there is a quoted postage price. Most sellers decline. It's not like I was offering less than they actually started their auction list price by...I find that a tad greedy of them to be honest. I've had people message me with very low offers for my buy it now listings or asking me if I'm "open to (lower) offers". I always say no. It infuriates me that many sellers have "best offer" on their buy now or auctions and decline every offer I send. Ask them politely what their ideal best acceptable offer would be and these greedy jerks say they aren't accepting offers! Why be so disingenuous? Or better yet, move their backsides into gear and amend their listings to excise "best offer" then.

Ebay does this all on it's own, without asking me. Then the low-ball offers come in. It's a headache.

Nope they never do. Always “dealers” trying to rip off sellers or SW fans trying to lowball. I either point out it’s an auction not a buy it now so I don’t have to endure another question or just dont respond at all. I mean member since 2000 and 1000+ rating should tell ppl that I was not born yesterday. In the last couple years these questions have accelerated too.

CC that’s great note. I set up 11 auctions with vintage Star Wars things last week that start to end tonight to see what interest it generated. I looked thru the low bids and it was all sellers trying to get a low ball price. A couple actually have bought figure lots I put up with buy it now for 3-4 bucks a figure because the figures were worn. Saw them listing them individually for $8-$15 each. I’ll gladly take this middle man approach and try to get the figures to real collectors. If other sellers want to try to rip off collectors by soaking up every lot that gets listed, that their shell game to play and it will catch up to them. I just buy and sell for my collection and occasionally to get new vacuum for home and don’t make it a business.

I immediately re-edit my listings when eBay adds best offers to prevent anyone making low offers - worst scenario is they put in an offer above or matching eBays price they've added and it sells...it annoys me no end because eBay are ensuring we are glued to their platform simply by having to edit our listings. The only ones who make money from this ploy are eBay and PayPal. Bastards.

I let people make offers. When offers come in, I'll think about it if it comes in higher than minimum bid.
If it's lower, it depends on if it's something I want to just get rid of or if it's been relisted several times and barely any watchers. I also sometimes tell them to offer again with less than 24hours left so I can wait till the last few seconds before accepting the offer if no one bids.

So I recently had an auction up for sale - the buyer offers me twice the listing price for it so I agree. Once I receive the shipment I box everything up, transfer the money from paypal to my bank account. The next morning the buyer asks me if I can cancel the deal - I said sure no problem the only issue is the money has been transferred from my paypal to my bank and in order to transfer it back it will take a couple of days.
This is all over the course of this week - I told him I apologized for the delay but can't do anything as the transfer will take two days. I messaged him this morning that the money should be in my paypal acct and I will refund it when I get home. I got home from work and found this message from him: "Alright guy... I'm pretty bullshit with your delay plus the fact that when I sell something I've got to wait 15 days before I can get the buyer's money but somehow you were able to take my money before you even mailed the item... and if the money isnt in my account by the end of the day which it probably wont be due to you waiting until my bank closed I'm going to submit a negative feedback on you... I'm sorry I feel this way but I wouldnt have requested the cancellation if I didnt need the fucking money... and quite frankly I'm beyond bullshit and I am recommending to you since your fucked with a negative feedback no matter what at this point that you continue to drag your fucking ass in giving me my fucking money back since your delay has already produced a fucking on my end..." Again I have no idea what he is talking about - I have always received paypal payments instantly - perhaps because he is new to ebay it takes more time for payments to go through? Am I in the wrong? I thought I was being nice and transparent with the guy. |
