Those who read it, enjoy it. Those who don’t, talk trash about it.

I can’t speak for others, but I purchased and read the first three issues of this series which I think is more than enough to make an educated decision in terms of liking it or not. I didn’t like it because a) art is a huge deal for me and I dislike this art and b) the series didn’t feel like G.I. Joe. It felt like someone wrote a story and changed the names to Joe names. While I’m not a huge fan of Liefeld’s art, it is good enough for me and the story in that series is far more interesting to me. And, it would seem, more interesting to most since the series is considerably more successful in terms of sales.

Tunnel Rat issue was fantastic. And so many other Joes. Really all these side story issues have been great, better than the ones following the main cast around. The desperate Joes on the run stuff, all the dead Joes and how they died, really cool stuff. Also loving the art on those side story issues. Kinda wish the whole series was more like this, kind of stories bouncing around a world occupied by Cobra instead of the initial storyline with some new characters, the side story stuff really was the highlight of this.

Fair points. Yes, I've read #3. I'm a huge Wolverine/X-Men fan from the 90's and Deadgame has that kind of vibe. I'd love it SO much more if Marc Silvestri was drawing it...

I just read this title and got caught up. It's really good, sorry to hear it won't be sticking around.
Everything about this has been solid for the most part. The writer has gone very deep in the lore, and the storytelling has provided a consistent throughline while changing character perspectives which must have been hard. There is also something very poignant about the politics of the different sides. Paul Allor is a subversive genius. I dismissed this title originally because of the way it was being marketed, and I made a huge mistake. Paul Allor clearly has a deep reverence for the Joe canon, filling the series with deep cut references to Hama and DDP lore and obscure figure-only characters. I wish I had supported it issue to issue. The primary artist has been great. It's modern, well rendered and highly detailed in the right ways. I could name a lot of instances which stood out, but the Silent Castle has never looked this good either inside or out. The one fill in artist was a surprise but he was a good choice for the most somber, violent issue of the series. When is Castle Fall coming out, and could a letter-writing campaign save this title? It's close to COBRA in terms of world-building and quality. It really is good. I want to do an issue by issue breakdown.

But yea it's sad cause this really had potential for some great long term story telling, the later issues really were so good and showed so much promise of what they could do |

I haven't read all the issues but I think this would of done better as something other than GI Joe or an elseworlds series. I don't know why the elseworlds format isn't used more. Such a great tool for serving your customers. Instead let's radically reboot/change main continuity and drive people away. This had potential but being the main continuity hurts.
Things like GI Joe, Transformers and most super heroes are like comfort food. You can't mess with the recipe too much or people are going to get turned off. It's people like us that are probably over indulgent in these franchises that are constantly asking for something fresh. Slow down the release schedule and give the people more alternatives without taking what got you popular off the menu. But this is comics, fuck long term success, right? |
