The entire third wave is even lazier than the first wave, because not only are they direct repaints of figures we’ve gotten a dozen times now, they left out a lot of gear that at least the first wave had packed into their bubbles. How barren and sad are those enormous bubbles with a tiny knife centered above CC for example? I was holding out hope for this line based off the promising first wave of drivers, which have more effort than the rest of the single-card waves combined. Quote:
Cobra Commander seems like the only good figure in this wave but that is for those who did not get Ultimate CC before. This wave is a total pass for me.

I’m pretty much done with it now too. Might would get lady jaye for the head paint and cardback.

Anybody who can shed light ? Got these from my local pre-order source:
Retro series 1 Earth 2 Saturn 2 Crater 1 Rocket They changed the codenames from insects to space terms now? We all know the 3 new Retro. Who is the other one reissued? I hope it's Scarlett but judging from Hasbro's history of reissuing the shelf warmers (ex Classified wave 3:includes Scarlet & RB again. Classifed wave 4 includes 2 CC again), I'm not hopeful Last edited by Pimp Daddy Darklon; 11-21-2020 at 10:36 AM.. |

Maybe we aren't talking about the same thing here. This Vala kitbash:
Uses these legs: And I think they're a terrible choice for an ultimate Duke kitbash.

Thanks for making that point. For me, not having bought a joe since I was a kid, this is all pretty cool. But I appreciate fans who have been in it for the long hall and have experienced each release and better understand the potential that exists for this retro line.
2 vehicles, 1 vehicle, now no vehicles. That trend bummed me out. I was really hoping for something. The vehicles are a big part of what makes the 3 3/4” great in my mind. But trying to just have fun with collecting and not take things too seriously. FWIW It was cool to see the gun holder on cobra commanders back, like I had as a kid. And I never had a lady jay figure. I’ve always been meh on duke as a character so not to concerned with that odd facial expression. He was always the uptight manager type. My friends and I never picked him for our teams anyway

Yep, the problem for us old-timers doesn't lie with the toys themselves, it lies with us. It's not like Hasbro is charging us $13 a pop for defective shit that falls apart or disintegrates on opening. The toys in and of themselves are fine. It's our perception of them that causes the issues. There's a compulsion to keep buying, to continue collecting, but when what they're offering isn't something you want to buy, it triggers a weird resentment. You feel somehow "cheated". Like you're being forced to buy shit you already have or had. That's on us and it's ridiculous of us to feel that way. No one is forcing us to buy any of this. We need to realize that not everything is specifically for us, handle our compulsions and not take it personally when they release toys that don't appeal to us.
But to use Vala's kitbash with dated parts was just a bad move even for people who are new to modern 1:18 Joes. Repacking O-face Duke is possibly the worst choice you could make among existing molds. Those "new" people are going to open up those figures and find all of the same shortcomings we found with those parts over a decade ago. There will be unnecessary disappointment. Why would you sour new customers on your product like that? That, for me, is the additional frustration and irritation. You're poisoning the well with the few new customers you have while rubbing your existing customers' noses in your mess you left on the rug. The common refrain of us needing "new blood" because collectors can't support the line alone, if true, means that we NEED new customers to be happy with the product and have ravenous appetites for more. This amateur hour crap will do the exact opposite.

I already have a Duke kitbash using Quinn torso, someone else's lower arms (can't remember whose), and Resolute artic Duke's legs, but just for fun I'm gonna try a build with their tan Agency Ops torso and rolled sleeves (doing the same for Spirit, but with the light blue torso). If that doesn't work for some reason, I'll use the Contract Ops tan t-shirt torso and move the fuck on. I'm at the point now where good enough is good enough. I ain't got the time these days to obsess over little details.

I wasn't going to keep CC this wave if he was a straight repack of the Retaliation ultimate CC. We already have two of them in circulation at my house. I pre-ordered retro CC without seeing him (missed the live stream but got an in-stock alert) figuring I would cancel it unless it was actually different (darker blue, leg stripes, updated sculpt for armored CC, whatever). In that sense, I had no skin in the game either way. I was pretty sure I was going to cancel him anyway.
