He is Special Forces. I bet Larry just threw that in there to make him more of a badass, or Hasbro did so kids could put him in the Whirlwind or something. Artillery coordinator makes more sense as a forward observer, but there is only so much room on those filecards.

Also I think it was Tanksmsher who posted a while back that Vietnam era Special Forces soldiers kept the MOS of 11B during their tenure as a SF soldier. |

Found this in the back of Marvel RAH #110 – Lady Jaye's Dossier:
“She is a qualified single-engine fixed-wing pilot and has been checked out in the “back seat” of the G.I. JOE Skystriker attack jet.” She has also advanced to the paygrade of E-6 at this time (1990). |

From Osprey's book on the Green Beret in Vietnam, an ODA looked like this:
Detachment Commander (O3) Executive Officer (O2) Operations Sgt. (E8) Heavy Weapons Leader (E7) 11B/11C Intelligence Sgt. (E7) 11F Light Weapons Leader (E7) 11B/11C Medic Specialist (E7) 91A/91C Radio Operator Supervisor (E7) 05B Assistant Medical Specialist (E6) 91A/91C Demolitions Sgt. (E6) 12B Chief Radio Operator (E5) 05B Combat Demolitions Specialist (E5) 12B An "S" suffix was attached to the MOS to indicate Special Operations (Special Forces). Interesting that the XO was an actual commissioned officer. I wonder at what point they changed that billet to be filled by a Warrant Officer?

It was in 1983 that Lt. Gen. Maxwell Thurman approved Special Forces Warrant Officer Military Occupational Specialty 180A. There was some debate over whether to allow WOs to act as XOs but since they felt a lieutenant's contribution to the team was limited and sometimes a burden, the WO program was proposed as a solution.

Looking at Lt. Falcon's filecard it appears Hama might have been going with the pre-1983 makeup of a Special Forces A-Team. It does indicate he was an XO during Blue Light so that part would make sense. What doesn't make sense is that Flacon is still an O-2 in 1987 (Blue Light was stood up around '77 I think?). So 10 years in the Army with the same rank, I don't think so Tim. |

I'm not sure how you marry the two inconsistencies between Blue Light's short life span and Falcon's low rank. Either it never happened or he should have been a Major by 87. I suppose he could have been at least a Captain though if he got promoted in 1980 or so, but would be on the verge of a Promotion. I think Hama, found this awesome little slice of history, but sort of missed out on the finer details about timelines. I mean if you think about it there is no way Stalker should have still been and E-5 in 1983.

Exactly. Its almost like all the Joes who served in the Vietnam War froze in time during most of the 70's with no kind of progression. |

I've always operated under the idea that once recruited into Joe team, traditional rankings/promotions don't really apply any longer.
