I've always hated the helmets that Deep Six v2 and v4 came with. They're just big, ugly hunks of unpainted plastic in gaudy colors, and the character can't even see out of them.
Many years ago, I thought I could improve the helmet by painting the window in front. For some reason, I chose black for the v2 figure. While I don't think the helmet could have gotten much worse than the way it originally came, I also don't think I made it much better. I was never satisfied with this and regretted doing it. Last week, I finally ordered a replacement, unmolested helmet off eBay. It's fine, I guess. I suppose I'm glad I have it, though I still hate it. With nothing to lose on the painted helmet, I decided to try something radical and cut the window out entirely so you can see the figure's face. The problem is I'm not a particularly good customizer, and I really underestimated how difficult it would be to cut the helmet apart. There's at least a quarter inch of solid plastic in that section of the helmet. You can't just carve that out with an Exacto knife. I wound up needing a power drill and dremel bit. After making the hole and sanding it down the best I could, I glued a small piece of clear plastic in front for the glass. I couldn't get all the black paint off this plastic, so I left a ring of it around the edges. I hoped this might give it some depth or something, but unfortunately I think it mostly just looks sloppy. I wish I were better at this. Edit: Some additional touch-up on the paint has helped a bit, I hope. Anyway, if anyone were ever curious what this Deep Six might look like with a proper window in his helmet rather than solid plastic, here's a crude approximation of it. It looks better from a distance than it does up close. I haven't decided which version I'm going to leave on his head when I put the figure back in my cabinet. Sadly, I made a much bigger mess when I painted the v4 yellow helmet back in the day, and that one's not as easy to replace today. Last edited by Josh Z; 11-05-2022 at 03:24 PM.. |

Innovative! I like the idea of the see through "window". The colored in black window on the helmet looks good though too. Deep Six v2 is one of those figs I have vivid childhood memories of. If the helmet were a different color I think he would be a more favorably looked upon figure. Overall the mold is really cool - it was a nice update to the original Deep Six - kept his identity but changed to a normal Joe figure with better articulation.
Also nice collection of 93 Mail away figs! That is my next collection goal. |

I did that for my Deep Six as well. I originally painted the visor black and eventually cut it out.
It was way harder than expected but I really loved the result. I sold it off with my vjntage collection though. I actually did the same with Blowtorch's oxygen mask too.

Will that damage the plastic at all?
Also, does it have to be the gel? Looks like there's a smaller can of that brand available, but it's not gel. I don't want to be stuck with a lot of this when I only need to use a small amount. Last edited by Josh Z; 10-17-2020 at 06:15 PM.. |

I recommend testing it out on something you don't care about first to get a feel for it. It will also strip factory paint. It can be a bit tedious, but it'll be far easier than finding another. Also, I've only used the gel, but I can say that the leftovers will be useful for other household projects, stovetop deep cleaning, etc.

Same here...I carefully cut the front fake window By drilling small holes first. Then filling it.
Later gradually cut a clear piece until it matches. Press fit, then secure with glue. Next step would be to add transparent color hue or use a smoke/tinted Window I left shavings in it, and later scratched the window while trying to adjust it. Oh well... it's kinda cool to see his face now, just like on the filecard artwork!! As far as the big chunky orange helmet, i found it very useful as a kid when diving in murky waters. Anything less bright and any smaller, and he's even harder to find!! Last edited by Joecollection18; 05-10-2022 at 01:41 AM.. |

Or,
y’all can cast the helmet in clear and paint the helmet whatever color you want.
