I'm fairly certain that Zartan and his siblings were redheads. Zandar and Zarana both were originally painted that way and Zartan's Mohawk was the same. It was only in the comics that the twins had pink hair and Zartan looked different every time we saw him in flashbacks without his hood.

This looks like it could be a fun thread.
-After the HISS Tanks and the Terror Drome, I think the Cobra Bugg is one of my favorite things from the line. I'm still kicking myself for not picking one up for a fantastic price at Joefest. -The Hall of Fame is one of the most near and dear things to my heart that Hasbro has done with A Real American Hero. That line is what took my interest in Joe from "passing" and into obsession territories. -I unapologetically love the DIC series and can't wait to finally finish Season 2 of Sunbow so I can start the DIC eps back up. (I never watch the 87 movie.) -On that subject, Cobra Commander's fate in the 87 movie really messed with me as a kid, and I'm still a little miffed by it as an adult. -I prefer the 90s updates of a lot of the classic characters to the more iconic 80s looks. Duke, Stalker, Snake Eyes, Bazooka, Beachhead, Mindbender.....even 90s Zartan and Firefly were all figures I have always loved and oddly preferred. Maybe because I could actually get them, whereas there was no shot of getting original versions of those guys in the 90s? -I still fondly remember the Spy Troops and Valor vs Venom eras and feeling like Joe was really "back" when I'd go to a store's toy section. For whatever reason, the 25th didn't feel the same to me. |

No action figure should ever cost more than $5. Look at The Corps for proof of that. Don't give me the old inflation or cost of new design garbage either. How much time went into the retro walmart line?

I think there's less incentive by major companies to make cheaper action figures because now kids grow out of toys by age 7 and shift their focus on video games, etc. You just won't get kids collecting a toy series for 5 years like when many of us were young. GI JOE itself was, according to former Hasbro people, the last line kids got into heavily before quitting toys entirely. The focus audience was around 10 back then or something. Also, Gen Xers will throw money away on a pretty retro cardback with a Happy Meal quality toy inside its bubble. |

The BUGG is an all-time top 5 Cobra vehicle, imo. Such a unique and trippy design. Plus so much fun to just kinda play around with, opening and closing stuff, removing parts and chewing on them, etc. Almost like a Fisher-Price toy, but in a cool way. If people here were honest (not saying they're not, just saying if they were) they'd admit that the DiC series is nowhere near as lousy as its reputation suggests. (And that the Sunbow series is not as great as they claim, either.) Even if certain DiC episodes clearly cross the line from charmingly child-like to severely retarded*. Probably due to being influenced so heavily by the TMNT cartoon, which is blatantly obvious and sometimes feels forced. Plus later episodes were way too focused on Metal-Head. *No offense to anyone suffering from an intellectual/developmental disability. Oh, and that reminds me ... don't forget to watch the big debate tonight, everyone.

Totally agreed on the Bugg. I had a friend who owned one, and I'd just get stupidly absorbed playing with the thing, taking it apart and putting it back together, and just being all in all awed by such a unique piece of vehicular equipment. As far as DIC goes, we're absolutely on the same page. I've got no hate for Sunbow, but Sunbow was giving us goofiness from the get-go, and they weirdly get a pass. I know DIC dialed the goofiness factor up and have got an episode like Kindergarten Commandos, but it was as much a product of its time as anything else. Plus, I loved some of DIC's outlandishness. CC writing a book called "Cobra Commander: A Real American Hero"?? That's gold. I wish I could buy a copy! |

Hawk V1 was 'deep cover' and bleached his hair blonde.
Scarlett liked it when Grunt hit on her. Sunbow Mainframe and Zarana did hook up and settled down happily ever after much later in life. The Dreadnocks are, in fact, little cuddly teddy bears. Last edited by bromanagro; 10-22-2020 at 10:58 PM.. |

I love Walmart's retro releases. Makes me feel like a kid again. Pure nostalgia. And it's not only Joes, it is also Masters of the Universe and The Transformers.
All hail Serpentor. I liked G.I Joe: The Movie, and the figures Golobulus, Nemesis Enforcer, and the Royal Guards. I fully support Sgt Slaughter's inclusion. Mercer is underrated. Some of my favorite figures to play with were Big Boa, Road Pig, and Croc Master, even though I started in 1983. 1982's Wave 1 was underwhelming. Too many characters looked alike due to swapped parts. I'm talking about Breaker/Clutch, Hawk/Short-Fuze, Grand Slam/Flash, Zap/Grunt, etc. I even had problems telling who was who in the comic books. There's a reason why Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Stalker, and Rock N Roll lasted so long- they stood out. However I do feel bad for the forgotten ones who are not used often in lore or reboots. G.I. Resolute was better than any other Joe cartoon or live action film. I prefer Cobra practicing "the ends justify the means" (and actually lower crime and create jobs) as opposed to being pure evil. For as much as I admire and respect Larry Hama, sometimes he abuses his Word of God status by being opinionated about which characters/history matter. I don't believe in gatekeeping in any fandom. |
