Finally, some indication of post-launch roster, map and gamemode expansion. I suggest everyone hit them up on Twitter with character requests!

Okay, I played through the first mission, where you have to take over the Flagg with Cobra Commander and Storm Shadow. Here's random impressions, in no particular order:
So far, it's a solid yet generic game. The hand-drawn cut scenes are kinda charming, if low-budget. But they work. The controls a tight and responsive. No complaints there, except maybe during the turret-based side-quests, where things are a tad sluggish. The fact that the cannon fodder enemies seem to mostly consist of robots gives the whole affair the feel of something that's aimed at children, which makes no sense it's probably almost all grown-ass men buying this. The graphics are actually quite nice, for the most part. I like the cell-shaded look for the game, and the character models are all well-done. I especially like the old-school Cobra Commander skin that comes with the deluxe version. However, things are not perfect. Some textures are embarrassingly low-res. Like, when you walk up to a Skystriker, the GI Joe logo looks like it was done in MS Paint by a 3rd grader. Also, the overall resolution seems to be low...when enemies are closing in from a distance, I have a hard time making them out from the background clutter until they get close. The game could use a bit more crispness...this game could have easily been done on a PS3 with horsepower to spare. But on the PS4? Not impressive at all. The music is suitably GI Joe sounding. I especially love the creepy music that plays during Cobra cut scenes, reminiscent of the music from the TV series. The gameplay...it's solid, but like others have said, generic and very basic. If you have half a brain you'll have the gameplay mechanics down in 10 seconds. It seems hard to get killed...you get hit a lot by enemy fire, but your character is a bullet sponge, at least on the difficulty level I was playing on. Maybe I need to jack the level up. The partner AI seemed to be working fine when I was playing...Storm Shadow didn't get lost or stuck on the environment, and he was actually somewhat useful in combat. I know some people were bitching about the AI in that regard, but I had no problems. Not yet, at least. And, about the auto-aiming. It's weird. Some of you have said it doesn't work at all, but that's not true. You hit the lock-on button, and if your crosshairs are near an enemy it automatically snaps onto them...for one shot. Then you seem to immediately lose the lock. So the trick is that you have to constantly lock and shoot, lock and shoot, lock and shoot. The developers either decided to implement an interesting auto-aiming system that requires a tiny bit of skill, or they had no idea what they were doing and completely and totally fucked it up. I have no idea which it is, but I don't mind the way the auto-aiming is set up. You just have to get used to it. The story is pure GI Joe and fits perfectly, at least so far. The voice acting seems pretty well-done and the voices appropriate, especially for the Cobra characters. Some of the Joes sound weird, however. And I think the deluxe version was worth the extra 10 bucks. The digital art book is nice, and since I like the soundtrack it's cool to have the option of listening to the tracks whenever I want. Plus the deluxe-exclusive old-school Cobra Commander skin is fucking sweet. And the extras look great so far...there are tons of things to unlock, from weapon and character skins to comic books and more. The developers may have only turned in an average budget game, but you can tell that the game was made with love. Also, in the extras, they mention how development of the game was impacted by the pandemic, so it's possible that the game could have been much better otherwise. I'm sure they'll be some patches in the near future that will improve things. BTW, no bugs or glitches to note of yet. So overall, it's a somewhat generic yet very solid budget game with good controls that implements the GI Joe license very well. Yes, it's not an AAA title with millions poured into it (and it shows), but it's still a fun play and I'm glad I bought it. |

BTW, mission 12 or 13? Wow, I didn't know the game had some length. Cool. Looking forward to it!

It's not clear based on the material and footage that ive seen of the game however = I have a question:
Does it explicitly state that GI Joe are American (with the colors Red, White and Blue displayed anywhere at all in the game) ???? |
