I think the guy that most inspired me to actually start was Stocos28. At that time, I wasn't super aware of individual guys, but I cut my teeth on Star Wars, and his work came up a lot both in research and as inspiration.
Still really love his work. Also, like Stronox's Joe builds, but Ian is probably a big inspiration based on the all-around accuracy of his work compared to the source material, which is generally consistent with the aesthetics I'm going for in my work. I going to do a little more concept driven stuff here soon, but I always generally default back to adherence to the source material. There's a ton of guys who's work I enjoy and respect, and draw inspirations from here and there, but I think Stocos28 and JustIan are the bookends.

As a kid I cut out cardboard wings and taped them on figures to make Flash Gordon hawk men. I think late 90’s I used (actual) plumbers putty to give a stormtrooper a bent elbow. But joe customizing started after seeing badsociologist’s oktober guard. I pretty much copied his camo pattern as exactly as I could for daina. Since then, mswi had what I would consider probably the best joe customs ever done.

I copied OreoBuilder's idea for a FLAGG crew using DG Shipwrecks. That probably got me into customizing.

Shit, how did I forget OB? He’s definitely another guy I keep an eye on. Also the only guy I’ve straight copied intentionally.

In those days Alyosha's work was always popping up on joecustoms and toynewsi and blowing my mind every damn time. Also Stronox did a DDP style Cobra Storm Shadow that I'll never forget. Pretty sure that one was posted here on HT like 8-9 years ago. |

For me the one and only will always be Obi-Shinobi and his great customizing ideas. His revolutionary idea using LEGO sails for straps and holsters. Man...good old days ....
The philosophie is simple: do better. Hasbro will never give you a 100% figure. Its bussiness. If Hasbro would - there will be no reason to produce another item again and again and again... Thx to BFS, MTF, Chicken Fried Toys, Zombie Lab and the others - we have now a bunch of great parts for making our awesome figures.

Lately I’ve been looking again at all the great customs from long-time and newer customizers both 3.75” and 6.” Makes me feel kinda thirsty so I thought I’d stop by the water cooler with a question or two for everyone...
Name 1-2 customizers or customs that inspired you to start customizing -OR- Name 1-2 customizers or customs that inspire you today I’m looking forward to your answers (I’ll share mine later) Over the years there have been so many names that have inspired me to do certain things and or have helped to shape my vision that I couldn't possibly name them all. The Tank itself deserves a lot of the credit as I found most of my inspiration on here and the terrordrome (is that even a site still?)

Back when I started customising I was just googling the characters names for inspiration without any idea really of who made them. I believe the first customiser whose work I remember actively following, and wanting to try and copy, was Oreobuilder.
These days I mostly use Marauder figures for my customs and there are a few customisers whose threads I regularly return to for inspiration, so I could start quite a list, but in terms of 1 who was the first for me I would say Oreobuilder. |

The Marauder Task Force line is definitely what got me into customizing myself. I was always hesitant to alter official Joe product so that line coming out helped create a situation where I felt comfortable putting paint to figures.
As far as specific customizers, all of the regulars on Hisstank bring something different to the table so I get a lot of inspiration and motivation from everyone on here. To give some specific examples, probably the two shared among my brother and I the most are Rob & Kuh_Rupht. Rob because he makes a lot of figures from the era I tend to tackle and he doesn’t get scared off from using bright colors. And then Kuh_Rupht because he’s constantly dropping insanely awesome updates to classic characters.
