I think DDP is going to be my canon and I'm just going to forget that 155-and-a-half on up ever existed...

At least DDP advanced plots and tried new things. Did they even mention the words "Brainwave Scanner"? I checked my "records" (yes, it's embarrassing that I'm re-reading my old recaps) and in issue 164, I first thought "Hmm…I never thought I’d say this, but these are beginning to make the Devil’s Due series look like classics, in comparison." https://www.option38.com/g-i-joe-a-r...ican-hero-164/ Yet Hama instantly turned it around in issue 165, with a cool dogfight, then began trying...gasp...new things. I think whenever he's burned out, Hama goes back to his favorite tricks: Brainwave Scanner, ninjas, and silent issues. When he avoids those, he can turn in decent stories (like the "Special Missions" sub-series, from a few years back).

I'm still very much enjoying ARAH. Also true: I wouldn't lose any sleep if we never saw the brainwave scanner again...

Yea, DDP really was a much better follow up sadly. Theres been a handful of highs in this continuation but it's been a messy trail of never ending plots that seem to be going nowhere and no clue of where they are going. Hama has made it clear many times he just makes this up all as he's going along and it's been years now that plots have been left dangling and seemingly not leading into anything.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I agree. This was actually a good comic. Good artwork and action packed coherent story. Rare with modern Hama, imho.
This 274 is a good one and a "get" if you are an OG fan of the Marvel run. |

Has there been any real justification for the inclusion of Bongo the Balloon Bear's van? Aside from Clutch saying: "hey, look what I restored"?
"Hey, remember Ripcord's old, dead, girlfriend? I went ahead and rebuilt her van, dude!" "Not at all creepy, Clutch..." They could've just as easily (and normally) used a "YoJoe Cola" delivery truck or the "Country Delivery" van they used in the 2012 Annual. It seems senseless and frivolous to include Bongo's van.

In the past when I extolled the positives of the DDP run I would get a lot of static on Hisstank, and now others are agreeing that there was actually a coherent storyline in that series. It wasn't perfect by any means, but certain characters like Cobra Commander and Beachhead had their best representations in those issues.

Too many purists who act like only Larry can write Joe. The series gets more and more goofy, Cobra Commander gets dumber every year, Snake Eyes gets more ninja family pals, Snake Eyes gets more uber leet hacks and kills another division of Cobras all by himself. Granny takes out armies with bricks in bag, and no one knows what the hell is the point of the blue robot ninjas are anymore.
