I was re-reading Issue 155.5 earlier today and I was thinking...How much time passed between Issue 155 and Issue 155.5? Weeks? Months? Years?
I can see it being any of the three but I think I would prefer it to be years.(Just my opinion) What do you think? If it was years, would you love for Mr. Hama or another writer to fill in the blanks? Yes, I know G.I Joe was disbanded and dispersed during that time according to Destro but I would like to think there was always a few Joes fighting the fight against Cobra...perhaps a few chosen by Hawk.(I would think Undercover and such and not the popular Joes seen in Issue 156 to report to Hawk. Chuckles or another Undercover agent would be perfect for letting Hawk know when Cobra had a big plan and this was a very big plan) Cobra Commander seems like he is very threatening in Issue 155.5. Let us consider some of the plans he had in the making: 1)Created the Broken Star Liberation Army Terrorists to cause the US to hire Cobra as Security, without anyone learning the truth(to our knowledge, until maybe the end of the storyline where Cobra was defeated) 2)Has some of the major Cobras back in the fold, even if it is through the Brainwave Scanner(Ex. Destro, Baroness, Billy, etc) 3)Has connections with the Jugglers and gets them to do a favor for him(Top Pentagon Advisors to press the President) 4)Has no concern about whether there will be enough votes to get martial law 5)Has Baroness, Billy and Storm Shadow on a mission to get acetycholine interupters and such 6)Has cool Battle Armor to protect him that can fly with defensive and offensive capabilities 7)Can activate "fiscal crisis protocol" 8)Has "global warming acceleration cells" 9)Has "bio-chemical bunkers" to unlock 10)Has plenty of Crimson Guards that only recently remember their mission(BWS?) 11)Has enough Cobras trained for security after Martial Law is declared 12)Had Zartan and others start a rumor-mongering campaign on the internet that increased paranoia about "hundreds of other attacks being covered up by the Government" 13)Has more than one new Springfield As you can see, all of this is very ambitious and shows how threatening Cobra Commander can be when he is written like he was written in Issue 1. Anyway, what missions did Zartan, Billy, Baroness and Destro do for Cobra Commander between Issue 155 and Issue 155.5? Did Destro sell him lots of weapons for a low, low price to Cobra? Was Baroness an Intelligence Officer again for a while? Did Storm Shadow do some things he regretted?(Ex. Assassin work, etc) Did CC and Billy reconcile any as father and son and eat ice cream together?(I know I will get some funny and possibly some sarcastic remarks on that one. haha) Sorry, my imagination was going wild about all of the possibilities about a series based between those two issues. What would you think about such a series?(12 Issues or more) Or would it just be better to cover it with possible flashbacks? What team would you like to see working for Hawk secretly? I understand some will want it to be only weeks or months between Issues 155 and 155.5 because of the age of some of the Joes. Just wanted to know your opinion. So which one? Weeks, Months or Years? I would also like to know your reasons for such, if any. . P.S. No, I will not keep doing these crazy posts like I did back in the day. Haha |

Well its a comic. They did this stuff to continue the story so in essence at the end of the day it doesn't matter. Besides, it hurts if you think about it too hard anyway.

I agree that Cobra Commander used to be more menacing and I wish he would be again. ARAH tends to suffer from weak villains. They're either written as buffoons, like CC, or they almost always end up siding with the good guys, like Destro, Baroness, and Zartan. I would love for ARAH villains to be true villains--unscrupulous and evil.

The other thing about 155.5 was that it featured Joes that were already dead in the storyline. I just can't remember if it was only on the cover that had them or if they featured those characters inside the comic as well though.

It was only on the cover, however, that all has gone out of the continuity window lately. Also, several of the issues created during 2012 explicitly showed the date (at the San Diego ComicCon and Dr. Burkhart's tombstone) - which is beyond realistic as many of the JOEs are my father's age and he retired from the military many years ago. So, was it years? Technically, in real time, yes; realistically for aging JOEs, no.

I love 155.5. I wish we saw more of *that* Cobra Commander--and his battle armor.
Comic book time is...abstract? ARAH has been around for 40 years and obviously nobody has aged so how much time passed between 155 and 155.5 is impossible to know but obviously some time would have to have passed for Cobra to rise to that level. |

One thing to keep in mind is that comics come out once a month. So a year in real time is like 12 days in the comic universe. Also sometimes they have the next issue pick right up where the last one left off and in that case several issues during the span of months in real time is sometimes like only one whole day or two in the comic universe. Just something to keep in mind and also it helps a lot not to over think it. We all love Joe, but it is a comic for entertainment purposes.

Thanks for all the comments. I understand the reluctance to even add more time(especially years) to the timeline, making the Joes even more older than they are. However, I just feel these are some really good plotlines that Mr. Hama could have followed up on. I guess we just need to believe that all of the plans I mentioned were stopped all at one time when the Joes defeated Cobra and Snake Eyes was captured by Cobra(Only to be rescued by Storm Shadow shortly after)
Anyway, I also was impressed by the following in Issue 156: 1)ARBCO Security Systems 2)Springfield Armed Response Associates* 3)C.O.B.R.A.(Coordinated Order By Righteous Americans *Possibly "S.A.R.A."? Oh well, guess these were caught and arrested too. Well, I guess it is too late to pursue these storylines anyway. |
