Thanks. I honestly feel that the rage I did came out really well. I ended up buying another Rage body and may do the peroxide/sunlight treatment to it. I thought the Oxi Clean did a great job just removing the years of filth/dirt/dust from it as well.
I also just soaked a Dreadknok cycle I acquired in oxi-clean and I really liked the results. I did keep the water more lukewarm and used alot less oxi clean but came out happy with the results and how it looks. Any tips on rusty screws? I have read soaking in vinegar works.Just wasn't sure for how long. Quote:
If the rust was just topical the screw will look nice and shiny again. If it was a deeper corrosion then the screw will now be blackened from oxidation. At this point to can just roll with the blackened screw or get a replacement if you want a clean one. Rise the screw off well and dry it well. Then fold over a paper towel or rag a few times and drip some baby oil or WD-40 into the crease. Drop the screws into the oiled crease, fold over the towel, and work them between your fingers. Just rub them back and forth between your fingers. This will prevent future rusting and safely remove any remaining topical rust, it will also safely clean rust off of the threads without damaging them. I’d also repeat the step with a clean paper towel to remove excess oil. Petroleum products may damage plastics. If submerging in hydro peroxide isn’t practical you can try a paste. I’ve read some recipes that actually use Oxi. I’ll try to find it and post it. I’ve had success with a paste of peroxide and baking soda mixed to a toothpaste like consistency then add a few drops of tea tree oil and apply with a soft toothbrush or Q-Tip. Please be aware, peroxide only works on white, off white, or light gray plastics. It will ruin any color on your toy. Please be careful. One final note about restoration. For me, a broken tab or so is cool if it was my childhood toy and doesn’t impede function. I’m not that guy what needs a 9+ collection. My Terror Drome has a broken tab. I broke it 34 years ago. Yes I replaced some busted parts for functionality, but that main base was mine. And that means more to me than any mint one would. My Hydro Foil has a cracked bow. And that’s ok. Don’t be so quick to discard a cherished toy over a busted piece. Anyone one can buy a mint collection. To save a collection from a land fill, a collection that was played with back in the day, is it’s own reward. Toys, like a soul, should have some scars. Hope this helps.

So rust can be either topical or the damage can be deeper. In either case I hold the stem of the screw with a tweezers or pliers, (Heed Xero’s warning) and then work the head AND ONLY the head into a dampened Brillo pad, rinsing regularly to monitor progress. Don’t do this to the threads or you can mess them up.

I wish I had more of my childhood vehicles - dad was in the army so we moved around alot and along the way some of our vehicles got lost or probably thrown away during moves. The only two original vehicles I have from my childhood are my little brother's Ice Snake and a VAMP given to me by my best friend. Luckily we also traveled with our GI Joe figures so I still have quite a few of them left. I totally understand where you are coming from in terms of small broken parts on vehicles/playsets though - the sentimental value of having your own childhood toys trumps and small imperfections. I did see a couple of videos on youtube where they create a paste (I believe they use some sort of beauty product with peroxide in it). I may look at trying it out. My experience with the Rage has gotten me interested in other vehicles that I would normally ignore due to the yellowing of the plastic. |

Some were broken so badly there was little to nothing salvageable. Some I never owned. But when possible I always try to use as much as I can from my childhood adventures.

None of my collection is from my childhood. We moved in 1989 and all my toys were in a big box my dad left in a trailer he took to a junkyard.
I've always wondered what happened to all those toys... my hope is they ended up with a kid. But everything I have now has been collected since 2007. And I've amassed more than what I had as a kid... so the original loss doesn't hurt as much.

I did mange to track down my childhood SNES console though- I sold it as a teen to a buddy, and years later another friend in our former circle found it in their storage unit, it got passed around quite a bit I guess. Kinda cool. |

I grew up in a really small house and without proper storage and a home renovation a lot of my stuff got ruined. I saved what I could. Sometimes restoring these things makes it all feel better. Yeah I own move vintage stuff now than I did as a kid too. Wish I had my job in 1982! Damned child labor laws.

Just about done with 1986 figure restorations. I just need a hand accessory for my BAT and I'll add him. Obviously I have some vehicles to do as well.

I was recently gifted a 1982 VAMP that's in pretty good physical shape except for the fact that the original owner put way too many stickers on it when he was a kid. The thing was absolutely covered in stickers when I got it. It appears that he put all of the original VAMP stickers as well as a full set of Polar Battle Bear stickers onto it for some reason. Many of the "correct" stickers were also applied either crookedly or in the wrong locations.
I spent a good amount of time with a toothpick and some Goo Gone carefully peeling off all the stickers, then scrubbed the jeep down and re-applied the VAMP stickers. Unfortunately, the plastic underneath the Battle Bear stickers has badly miscolored in some spots, especially the hood. Is there anything that can be done about this? On the plus side, I now have a baggie full of original Polar Battle Bear stickers if anyone needs them. Last edited by Josh Z; 05-29-2021 at 11:09 AM.. |

My lastest edition to my 1985 album. Full barrage of pics in the Flickr link below in the 1985 GI Joe album.

Aaaaand this guy, I never owned this one. It looked lame and it feels like a left over form 82. Maybe it’s just Flash on he box. As I was restoring it I thought it might have been a fun day to have this guy in the back ground of an assault of the PIT and to have the Joes use it as a last ditch effort to plow through a line of approaching BATs.
