I also did some more work on a model of the Cobra SMG that I started a while back but hadn't touched in a while:
Not finished yet, of course, but it's close now.

I might print one for test fitting harness stuff but that's about it. Thanks for the scanning work on those ponies!

Cobra SMG is pretty much done now. It just needs some scaling work:

I test printed the Cobra SMG on my home printer (original 1:18 in the bottom of the first picture):
Lack of a trigger finger becomes problematic... I need to thin down the grip's thickness a little but the figures can still hold it as is. What do you guys think? Does it scale properly or does it need to be resized?

I'm going back to my diorama parts roots here once again. Here is the pallet I have been unable to print at Shapeways for any sane price, now easily printed at home:

I had a request to make the stone slab from the Indiana Jones map room scene (you know, the slab with all of the holes and Indy has to pick the correct one for planting the Staff of Ra). So I went ahead and made the whole darn slab along with the curved steps. Just add a bit of fine sand and you're all set:
And it will be printed in 3 parts so I can fit it on my printer bed. So far, I am looking at using four screws for assembly, but I am having second thoughts about the interface between the base ring and the curved steps. I think I might add connection points off to the side as well to give better stability. Anyway, it's still a WIP, but here is what I have at the moment.

I figured I would start up a thread to share progress on my 1:18 scale 3d-modeled diorama parts. All designs will be made available on my Shapeways shop. If there is something you'd like to see in 1:18 scale for diorama use, feel free to make suggestions.
I already have a chess board and security access palm scanner, but I'm not stopping there. First up on my project development schedule is an array of monitors, complete with articulation: When assembled it will stand about 1.5" tall and a bit over 3.75" wide. I have a test print in progress, so we'll see how that turns out pretty soon. My biggest worries are whether or not the arm can support the weight of the screens without flexing, and whether or not there will be enough friction in the hinge joints to keep the arm truly able to be posed. The design for this multi-monitor setup is based on this real-world item: And next up on my list of things is an articulated "robotic" arm for laboratory use. I plan for my design to look something like these when it's done: It will have working hinges and swivels so it should have range of motion just like the real thing. Stay tuned if this is your kind of thing. I hope to be doing quite a lot of diorama bits and pieces especially if the articulation methods I have in mind end up working as expected. There are things I have always wanted to be able to have in Joe scale and 3d printing has brought that within my reach. |

I updated the map room slab and stairs setup to be more securely assembled by putting some little tabs on one half and slots on the other with screw holes through both parts:
That's six screws now spread across basically four locations to hold all three pieces together. Overall, this diorama piece ends up being about 8.54" x 11.83 x 1.13". Pretty close to a sheet of typing paper in its footprint.
