Besides big projects like HasLab or the Super7 Snake Mountain, are playsets ever made any more?
I took notice when after the Sail Barge, Haslab shifted to basically big figures (Unicron, Sentinel). I wondered if that meant Hasbro wasn't even fond of this format for vehicles and bases.

Playsets have been a rarity for a long time, and from everything I've heard that's been on retailers rather than sales; I mean, why take up an entire shelf with 4 playsets you make $60 profit on when you can put 40 figures there instead and make $160 in profit?
I'm hopeful that the shift away from retail spaces will make playsets viable again.

Collectors are showing that we can & will be patient for an impressive piece through crowdfunding . I just wonder what the cost to run a Crowdfunding campaign is. Is it just a matter of throwing something up for a few weeks saying they are going to repop the Terrordrome or Night Raven if we manage to get X number of orders?
It’d be cool if Haslab was run like LEGO Ideas. Have a bunch of potential projects get voted on, get a review cycle & an explanation why something was or wasn’t picked for production, then a crowdfunding campaign. Last edited by txbart; 07-30-2020 at 11:01 PM.. |

There some other things cooking out there right now for Star Wars. Hasbro is just now re-releasing the big Millennium Falcon toy through a partnership with Target and Disney's Galaxy's Edge for around $400. Still, that's way cheaper than what the prior Vintage Collection release is going for on the secondary market. Even though some may think of it as a vehicle, it's really a playset IMO. And one heck of a playset at that. Hasbro has also been doing some "playsets" which are more like diorama pieces like Jabba's Palace and they are getting ready to put out a Bespin carbon freezing chamber set where you need to buy 2 to put together to make a complete environment. To be honest, as I get older I find myself looking for diorama sets that work with figures of various scales more so than actual playsets. Quote:

The control tower opens one direction while the play area of the flight deck is on the opposite side. If they could somehow design the control tower where you could simply put one side of the FLAGG toward a wall and still access the tower that would be great. If they were to ever do a Haslab FLAGG, I would be down for an updated Resolute-style FLAGG with circular command center and tower. The top of the command center could come off and then maybe you could access the control tower from the back instead of the side. Jason |

Truly we don't see very much these days with regard to playsets I would have to agree.

I kind of regret not picking up that large playset that they keep re-purposing for various movies from Batman v. Superman, then Justice League. I also saw the Spider-man one at Ollies a while back, but I felt like I didn't have any place to put it so I passed on it. If they ever release those again for another movie I think I'll pick it up and try to customize it. Speaking of playset/dioramas, have you guys seen that custom Death Star playset that popped up on Facebook yesterday! That thing is awesome! That makes me want to work on a custom Silent Castle or cartoon version of the GIJoe HQ. Jason |

Toy photography is hot, so dios are hot. You get the same effect with smaller sets. I think Hasbro and other companies are paying attention and only gradually easing people back into buying playsets to see how they perform. I also think they won't be all over retail with online being the place to be right now.
Anyone know the difference between a play set and a vehicle? People keep using them interchangeably. And the meaning of play set is all fubar. Now we have Disney calling figure sets and roleplaying toys play sets. By their logic practically anything with more than one piece could be! Confusing! I've always thought the playsets were building pieces or vehicles you could open up and pose several figures, for "play" or display. Maybe this is their way of saying "sure we still make "play sets". Check this out. Yeah right, mittens. Tell your story walkin Mouse. Last edited by Mega Convoy; 07-31-2020 at 08:49 AM.. |
