I predict every Retro release will continue to sell out into 2021.
I predict that exactly the same thing will happen with almost all Classified (except weird Roadblock repaints). There's no reason to think people are suddenly going to get tired of what either line is offering given how fast it is all being gobbled up. The lesson is that A-list characters in popular brands sell very well. Hasbro seems to finally have woken up to that. It's why the same A-list characters are getting released over and over again in Transformers (we've gotten Siege, Earthrise, and RED versions of all the big guys in just the last two years).

The fact that Hasbro didn’t put these at 9.99 is further proof that they wish 4” would fuck off. Without licensing, they could have done it. Kids and parents could get two of these for the price of one 6”, and they’re loaded with accessories? But nah, they can’t.

I think they will continue to sell out nevertheless. I see no reason why the next wave won't sell as well as this one. And the wave after that has Duke and Cobra Commander. I could be wrong, but collectors have bought up everything that's been offered. They can't keep it in stock online and wave 1 of Classified was in and out of stores in a second.

I don't believe kids are a significant market for either Retro or Classified. And I don't think that makes any real difference to GI Joe's viability over the next 12 months or so.

It would be sweet if they gave us a portly ME soft master. They could make him in Movie colors, and then re-release him in comic colors later. Or update the 25th hard master and put him in a 2 pack with soft master.

I’ll be really curious to see how these do long term (meaning into DEC/Christmas sales).
This continues to be my scale, but what will kids think? Will Fortnite really help push kids towards Joes and the 4” scale, or will Classified in the trendy 6” scale win the day? I tend to think 6” wins while even less collectors ignore Retro offerings if they continue to be simple releases from 4 years ago. Like said, it’ll be interesting to follow! I REALLY want new movie figures in 4” ME, so I hope I’m wrong.

The fact that Crankcase, of all possible Joes, was in the first wave gives me some hope there. Yes, I know the AWE Striker was an easy choice for them because it was used so often during ME, and you have to have Crankcase to call it "Retro", but he still came out of left field in my book. I was certain it'd be all Cobra Commanders amd Snake Eyes.

Well I am mixed on this line....I was, like many, hoping for the o-ring originals. They did it for Star Wars, and hell even Ghostbusters (which was nowhere even close to as popular and profitable as GI Joe was) with mostly good results. Okay, molds gone and they do not want to recreate them (though the original 13 used so much parts swapping it would have easily recouped costs) so they chose to use modern era. WHY CANT THEY EVEN CHOOSE THE RIGHT REPRESENTATIONS! I mean come on they did a remake of the 1984 Storm Shadow and 1983 Snake Eyes on 25th line....what happened? Even the Hiss Driver is a bastardized version. Whoever is on charge on this line needs to do some actual market research and studying of the product. Hell it looks like the Cobra Commander in wave 3 is going to be the sub-par 25th rather than the stellar Retaliation one! SMH!
I will buy the Vehicles for the Vehicles, but the figures....probably not. |
