I think that's ridiculous, yet probable. Remember those horrible Transformers design that no one wanted? One of the reasons they gave at the time was that the design was supposed to be very different from G1 so anyone could immediately know where the money from videos, images and promotions should go to, Paramount or Hasbro. Basically Hasbro licensed their own IP to another company so it could have profit over it. It's my understanding that this deal has changed ever since, considering how Bumblebee robots are closer to the G1 models.
My guess is that the same thing happened with GIJoe at some point. Hasbro put its characters in a movie, so profits are shared and licenses are tied. The end result is that some figures turn out unusable out of that specific label. This is a very wild guess, considering, well, Snake Eyes as a whole. Still, we never know how these deals are made in the background. I don't think Hasbro is incompetent, but there *is* some undeniable degree of carelessness in this Retro disaster. Why not o-rings? My first guess is overstock from the 50th line and lazyness: Here, some figures for the new movie and you old farts have the retro cards to jack off to, enjoy it. My second guess is license deals from previous movies and a bit less lazyness: We would NEVER do o-rings you fucktards, yet we couldn't get the real nice ME figures because LawSuit, so this is what we got. Enjoy? And my third guess is young people in charge not really understanding nostalgia, fidling with clean desktop collectibles instead of playing with toys in the backyard on the ground, truly believing that these are the pinnacle of GIJoe. Basically the livestream.

I don't think there is any support for this.
That masked SS headsclupt has no bearing on the actor Lee Byung-hun: https://www.yojoe.com/action/13/stormshadow49.shtml The the unmasked ROC SS Lee Byung-hun head was included with the figure so it's easy compare / contrast. Other than the same painted skin tone they share no resemblance. That SS figure design has no relation to any of the films and is based on the classic incarnation of the character. Just like Ultimate Cobra Commander, Ultimate Snake Eyes, Cobra Invasion Team Firefly which were all released in the same Retaliation film toy line. Last edited by Dod Ear; 07-21-2020 at 06:46 AM.. |

Overthinking things by a huge margin. Why would they bother with O-rings? lol. They are simply using the current molds they have cause they are more modern figures and it's the cheaper route to take for the line. Why create all new molds and figures just to bring back o-ring figures just to please a small portion of a dying breed of fan base who can't get out of the 80s?
Retro line is not the main product line, this is just some side stuff they are putting out to bait the toy collectors and it worked when it sold out so quick on preorders. It really does all come down to cost. This is a very limited line, subject to Walmart's demand for low wholesale prices (Walmart's M.O.). Not only does that negate o-ring (which, by all official accounts, would require all new tooling/molds--something that itself would require additional costs associated with safety certification), it also means Hasbro is gonna use the cheapest means possible to meet that wholesale price. Since these are recent toys, they are not only more cost-effective to produce from a production standpoint, but from a safety certification standpoint too. None of this should be hard to understand. Walmart and Hasbro got together to get some 1:18 Joe shit out there. They didn't have to. And you can rest assured no one is making a killing off this piddly little limited line of toys. Matter of fact, I bet ya anything some Hasbro sales guy had to work real hard just to get Walmart interested in carrying this line. Maybe even had to piggy-back it onto some other agreement for Star Wars Retro or Ghostbuster's retro or even the main Classified line. In other words, there are good reasons you don't always get what your whiny baby ass wants besides "Hasbro sucks". Besides, they're just fucking toys. You don't like 'em, don't buy 'em. Simple. Seriously, man, adult toy collectors are just about the most annoying creepers going. It's embarrassing and a big part of the reason there's a stigma attached to this hobby. |

Tell me about it. There’s a reason only my closest friends know I collect Joes because of the stigma of adult collectors (which sadly is mostly true)

So I had every 6" figure pre-ordered for a while. I started to get tired of waiting for BBTS to ever send me my order and with the new 4" line being announced I cancelled all my 6" figures.
Now that I've been educated and see that the 4" are just re-releases of some previous Target exclusives, I'm a bit disappointed in the line. I saw they announced some new 6" Target exclusives last night (which was a disaster sellout in seconds) so I decided well maybe I'll get the 6" after all. So this image is about a week ago when I was in the store and passed on these. I figured, well maybe they will have more in stock by now so I got up at 6 am and hit about 3 Walmarts in the area looking for them. Not a single store had any and there were no displays or any indication that these ever existed, even in the Walmart where I took that photo. Has anyone else noticed this and think it seems a bit strange? |
