I've always wondered why someone doesn't do the same thing with the ARAH file cards from 1982 through 1994 including mail-ins and variants.

Yup. Exactly three of them, as of this post.

Not trying to be That Guy or anything, but going by this definition of retro: imitative of a style, fashion, or design from the recent past. Then this line definitely qualifies as retro. I know it's semantics, but I'm a creative writing major, so semantics pop up a lot for me. And I would agree that it's a buzzword that gets bandied about a lot with vintage, classic, and so on, so it's valid to think of it that way, but what they put out technically fits the label.
Retro is a marketing term really, and not to be confused with a “repro”.

In the Full Force Fan Friday recap video, Adam Riches speculates on the main points on why they did not go with O-ring. It starts at 22:40 of this video:

They won't be in stores yet.
Glad I kept my file cards. Now if only I'd kept the boxes they were attached to! |

The 25th/POC/50th are all too big & sometimes much too big for the vehicles. While there are several that got the proportions & construction just right as a figure, some important characters didn’t. Destro & Baroness are 2 figures that just never got it right as a figure. A little piece of me was hoping for Hasbro to tool up all new figures for this line that had the best construction & proportions, but also remained within the dimensional limits of the O-ring figures. People who were hoping for o-ring design were most likely using the Star Wars retro line as a guide. Thinking that the GI Joe Retro line was going to be o-ring version of ARAH GI Joes. I know Hasbro in the past had said they would never do O ring style figures again. That style/process is dead. GI Joe ARAH hero took Mego CHiPs figures and painted them green and did mock ups to sell the idea/line to management according to the documentary the Toys That Made Us. Glad to see GI Joe back. Hope we get a few additional waves beyond the 2 already mentioned before the end of the year. Maybe Toyfare 2021 will have some more big GI Joe Retro reveals.

I agree, GiJoe is as much about the vehicles & playsets as it is the figures & characters. Why I voted o-ring is because they are consistent & reliable in that they were all designed to work with all the vehicles (or vice versa). O-ring figures also looked good on their cards with their minimal original accessories. The on the card look is what I figured Hasbro was going for with the whole retro/vintage concept.
