Happy Toys R Us day!
Two years ago today, the last big toy store closed it's doors. There have been rumors of a come back, but except for 2 stores, it remains a memory.

I'll believe in a TRU comeback when it actually happens.

eh TRU is dead in the form we know unless you live North of the border. I hear the two stores suck.

They finally tore mine down a week ago. Rivergate in TN. I was there the day it opened (1983 I think), and I was there with my kids the day before it closed 2 years ago.

I will never forget my first trip to a TRU. We didn't have any in my state but we took a vacation to Texas and we went to one there. My brother and I were used to simply a combined toy aisle but not a huge section of Joe toys that were floor to ceiling.
Man, I miss that store. |

I have a lot of nostalgia for TRU. As a kid, I first started going there in the '80's. It was always a real treat, especially given that their prices were always the least expensive (at the time) and they always had an incredible selection of all toylines. Fucking incredible!
I remember the especially amazing selection of ARAH toys there, especially from '83 - '88 - wow. I stopped collecting for a while in the late '80's - early '90's. And then, SW POTF2 started in the mid-'90's & I started going again. The store was definitely still going strong in the '90's, though by that time stores like Wal-mart & Target had great toy selections as well - so there was more competition. In the 200X's & early 20XX's, TRU was one of the only places I could find the ARAH comic packs (O-ring). And, later I was able to find a some great 25th-anniversary-on (POC, etc.) Joe figures/vehicles - some of which I could never find @ other stores. Among many other great figures, I specifically remember getting the amazing POC?! Low-light figure, as well as the re-done Tomahawk Helicopter. However, in the last several years before they closed (in 2018), I went there less & less - except to get store exclusives. The prices ended up being more expensive than other places (instead of less, as in the past), and the toy selection was - overall - not that great. Towards the end, I probably walked in the store only 1-2 times per year, as opposed to multiple times in previous years. I remember one of the last times I went to browse, I actually walked out of the store empty-handed - something which had never happened before. It was definitely the end of an era. Here's an interesting article on the store & it's legacy: https://www.history.com/news/toys-r-us-closing-legacy Last edited by Doctor Venom; 07-02-2020 at 03:51 AM.. |

My one and only visit to Toys R' Us (Los Angeles county) was on Black Friday 2002 when we were on a US vacation. My cousin took me before 6 AM and the line already snaked past the parking lot. Once inside it was a flurry of activity as toys were flying off the shelves. I remember the toy of the season was a Leapfrog.
Actually the whole day was surreal for me because after that and breakfast, she, her mom, my parents and I went from store to store looking for bargains. It got to the point when I just started laughing at the craziness of it all, because our sales in the Philippines were never like that!

I miss Toys R Us. And Childrens Palace. And Kiddie City. And Kay Bee Toys. And Family Toy Warehouse. How the hell did we go from having multiple stores full of nothing but toys to just a couple aisles in Wal Mart and Target? I remember when I was kid they had toys stacked so damn high I would climb onto the base shelves to reach the figures on the pegs!

I used to work at Toy R Us, and it was not fun. Every floor employee needed a minimum number of Geoffrey birthday club sign-ups every day, which was obviously a lot easier for cashiers than whoever was facing the preschool aisle. After signing up every friend/relative's kid, we all just made up fictional kids on the sheets. The customer service people would even make it a (very quiet) part of their advice to new employees. I thought it'd be cool if I'd be the one to do something about it!
I did the math one day and brought it to our manager. I explained that with the county's population, the average number of floor employees, the numbers expected of us, and how long the policy had been in place: if all of us hit quota every day then every single child within 80 miles of the store would have already been signed up a decade earlier, in the mid '90s! So I said that maybe the requirements should be relaxed a bit since we were being asked to do the impossible by getting all those sign-ups. I got moved to the backroom to assemble bicycles and Power Wheels. If it was a punishment, then it was an (I'd hope intentionally) ironic one, as assemblers one of the only non-managerial employees not required to get birthday club sign-ups |
