The problem for me though with the Star Wars retro line is that it's a niche collecting market. I collected modern Star Wars from 1995 to the Black Series, then turned my attention back to G.I. Joe. I've seen the retro Star Wars figures in stores, but nothing has motivated me, personally, buy any of them. It's nostalgic looking at them in those packages, which I can't stand the worn look of the packages, but that's about it.
Vintage collectors, probably already own most if not all of the vintage figures they can find. Where a "retro"/"repro" line such as this would be more successful would be to offer characters in the old Kenner style that have never been produced, like what they've done with Grand Moff Tarkin, such as the Bith Band, Ceremonial Luke, Rebel Fleet Trooper, Sandtrooper, etc. This idea though really wouldn't carry over as well into G.I. Joe. Again, most "vintage" ARAH collectors probably already have all the vintage figures they can find. Plus, I think the O-ring market is a niche market. However, I will quickly concede that in the face of the "retro" Star Wars line and Ghostbusters, that I would not be surprised if this "retro" line was not some sort of O-ring figures. I'm hoping not, that's what I'm expecting. Jason This is coming from someone who would have no issue if the figures end up having modern era construction rather then O-ring. I loved how Hasbro re-invented the line with the 25th anniv and throughout the modern era run. I don't think many of us who grew up with the ARAH O-Ring figures and converted to the Modern Era figs would hesitate to jump back on the o-ring bandwagon if Hasbro delivers a great product. I am eager to see what the Retro line actually is and hopefully we all find out next Friday. |

I doubt a Hiss would be in the works for bend ems... But I'd laugh my ass off if it was. And cry a little.

I think we're overlooking one scary possibility here: Bend 'ems made to look like the original o-ring figures.
Remember we heard the rumor about bend 'ems? Nothing else has been seen or heard about them. And this alteration would satisfy the argument that o-ring figures would be too costly to produce while making damn sure nobody would mistake them for vintage specimens. What if... Note that I'm a ARAH collector/fan who is ONLY interested in buying new figures, and that's it. I.e., even though I was a fan of the line back in the day & despite the fact that I don't have any of my original figures anymore - I wouldn't even consider looking for/buying any of the original '80's/early '90's ARAH figures due to: 1)The expense/hassle of looking for these, and 2) I don't like to collect/buy old figures due to the problems inherent in plastic deteriorating, rubber bands breaking (on the O-rings), etc. That all being said, I would definitely be interested in repros. of these O-ring figures. They would be new & in obviously better shape than any of these old figures from 34-38 years ago - even if these original Classic ARAH figures are still carded/unopened. Agree completely with all of this 100%. I am a huge fan of the '80's ARAH Joe figures & this nostalgia was what drew me into the 25th ann. figures from 2007-on. And, I really liked the modern construction & actually preferred it to the O-rings.

Do you collect high graded figures? Resin cased air tight? You don’t have to worry about those . I agree, the hunt for the vintage is harder now for sure. People just don’t realize what they have. Then when they are ready to sell they hop on eBay and compare their piss poor MOC to the going market and think they struck gold. It’s definitely a headache. I’ve steered away from eBay “collector sales”. Usually Low grades and incorrect price point for current market values. Finding 85 grades and up is the only way I’ll buy ARAH now. Exposed figures with no resin cases are ticking time bombs

As far as I know it's a Vala rumor (and we know how many grains of salt to take that with) that surfaced in January but it looks like our own SilverOptimus had wind of a similar rumor.
Have a look: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/5247460-post361.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/5247492-post365.html I didn't pull this rumor out of my ass, if that's what you're thinking.

I am still hoping these are 3 3/4 modern sculpting on "retro" cards. It would be awesome if the figures were POC/30th/50th style figures on 80s cards, and thats what makes them "retro".
I guess that would be equivalent to the Star Wars Vintage collection, which i LOVE as well. |

Can't wait to see the 3'' 3/4 scale...
really hope they improve on the articulations, there are some 25th and 50th anniversary figures that were really amazing.... As an old fan I can't deny that I love the old O-rings figures but I think things has to go on and innovate with new technologies of today standards... |

I think the O-ring figures may bring in more people just because of the retro/nostalgia aspect of it. I don't think o-rings are any more of a niche than the modern era to be honest. Also, the after market prices for vintage figures is getting ridiculous and alot of collectors would probably love to get O-ring classic figures again at a lower price point (I know I would). Also getting new versions of old figures that are 30+ years of age could be another potential plus for the classic style o-ring figures. It will all come down to Hasbro's execution of the product.

I am eager to see what the Retro line actually is and hopefully we all find out next Friday. 1. O-ring collectors 2. Modern collectors (who don't collect O-rings) 3. O-ring and modern collects (those who collect both) Again, its' like the Star Wars retro line. Even though I've been out of collecting SW figures since the black series, I have kept a lot of my figures in storage and thought really hard about buying some of the later figures such as Mosep and I've even considered buying the Jabba's palace set. But even as a 47-year old who played with the original Kenner figures, the "retro" line does not appeal to me, since I don't collect vintage figures - it's a niche group. The only appeal a "retro" O-ring line would have to a modern collector as myself would be for the accessories for customizing. Now, maybe Hasbro has both "retro" O-rings and modern (Snake Eyes movie) figures in line, which would satisfy a greater group of fans. For me, any details revealed between now and Marauder's Vietnam Kickstarter will just let me know how much money I can spend on either of these two genres. Jason |
