alright wiseguys - I meant whatever virtual event they might have in store instead of SDCC. But I suppose San Diego Cobra Commander is an interesting exclusive!

Granted, I’m assuming BM and Hasbro use identical processes, but IMO that seems likely when comparing 80s style o-rings to 80s style o-rings. |

Actually, the parts are molded on trees like a model kit. Check out glow-in-the-dark Black Major Snake Eyes or GITD Snow Serpent for examples of what that looks like. IIRC 85 Snake Eyes was all on one tree, even including Timber.

A better comparison would be Red Laser, whos Viper figures use a different plastic for the heads and forearms. He started doing more of the OG 13 parts too, where flesh parts were different plastic. Unfortunately, his operations may be over thanks to shady dealing from his contractor in China. Edit: upon further examination, some BM figures do use different plastics. He only sells complete trees of figures done in one Last edited by xasonnex; 05-01-2020 at 08:53 AM.. |

Black Major saves expense by having the entire figure and accessories done in the same plastic in the same go. Hasbro rarely did this, of the OG 13, only Snake Eyes had the same plastic color for the head as the rest of the figure. The flesh color heads and bare forearms were a different color plastic. And the accessories were a different plastic as well, often a softer plastic rather than ABS. Since BM does it in one go, a BM Snake Eyes sword feels so different from a vintage one. Also, until the '90's plastic trees, a great deal of Hasbro's accessories were not done on a "tree" like BM, but were done using an individual extraction. Any accessory where you see little circles that serve no purpose aesthetically might be where the extractor pins pushed it out of the mold. Legos use the same technique.

He only sells complete trees of figures done in one I don’t know enough about molding or the specific plastics Joes use to know whether that comparison was a useful one, but it’s what I had in mind. The first time I saw it I was really surprised, as I had always just casually assumed that color and mold were inseparable. No idea whether it’s easy or hard, expensive or not, possible in the 80s or not. It does seem rarer, but then again models generally have a bunch of trees so it might be less advantageous for them than it might be for a Joe. Do you have any idea whether the Major’s tooling, or Red Laser’s, is original or not? Obviously the shapes are what we all remember, but I’ve always wondered whether the shapes begat the molds or vice versa, & exactly what lineage if any their molds have. |

Different trees/molds for different materials makes complete sense, as I bet different plastics have different temp/pressure/time/etc needs. As far as color, in the 21st century I have come across examples of model kits with different colors on the same tree. Some aircraft kits I’ve done have been like this, and I think my Bandai C-3PO was too. Usually just a small sections for a color they don’t need enough of to make a separate tree.

It’s interesting stuff! Always wondered how the lettering change was done. Personally, I like BM and RL stuff a whole lot, and hope they keep going for decades to come!
