Worst part is when there's no modern figure better than the vintage.
I mean, realistically, about 99% of the modern figures have been sculpt and articulation. But some just don't "do it." I think the Retaliation Crimson Guard is a fantastic figure. But can't even hold a candle to a 1985 CG. He's just so must cooler in every way. Vintage Tunnel Rat too...with his big ass backpack and flashlight, the strap, the gun, the Larry Hama likeness.....no modern figure ever captured that. A lot of modern figures blow the old ones away, but there are always gonna be classics that can never be dethroned. |

Have you noticed the elbow cracks on specific figures or figures from a certain a year? The dreaded cracked elbow is my biggest let down/pet peeve since I got back into the vintage era Joes and I somewhat regret going full vintage and letting go of my sizable modern era collection. But as Otomo said there is nothing that can really be done. As a stop gap you could always just search for intact pieces on ebay and swap out the cracked arms.

Around 2009 when I was getting my undergrad degree at Purdue, I went to talk to one of my chemistry professors in his office. When I saw that he had a number of ARAH figures up on display in his office, we got to talking about G.I. Joe. He said that a lot has changed in the understanding of plastics even since the 80’s and 90’s and that unfortunately most of the older G.I. Joe figures (and figures from other toy lines from the same period) are doomed to gradually disintegrate. There’s really no way to stop that process as it is a chemical change, but obviously doing things like keeping your figures in a cool, dry environment free from UV light can extend their lifetime.

While I’m clearly less qualified than any professor on the matter of plastic shelf life, I will say that my dad collects plastic toys from the 50’s and 60’s and he hasn’t had many problems with plastic deteriorating or becoming more brittle. So I guess it’s possible they’re breaking down but I’m thinking it’s unlikely to happen during our lifetimes.

Although a new idea, I think Jungle Duke is a better figure than the ARAH Dukes. |

Depends on the toy line. GiJoe does have it's more prone figures, like the ones already mentioned (I have never seen an '89 alley viper WITHOUT cracked elbows, despite having owned many, both loose and MOC), but that's nothing compared to the metallic plastic of the Dinobots, which breaks if you look at it sideways, or the "stickiness" of a lot of old TMNT and MOTU figures, which is literally the plastic components separating and breaking down. Luckily, most vintage Joes and vehicles (to my understanding), were made from ABS, which is fairly stable, so I don't see the bulk of them rotting away in my lifetime.

none that ive found yet, unfortunately. my otherwise beautiful complete Michelangelo is a bit sticky, and i've looked into it a bit, with no luck. i'm curious if matte clearcoat would do it, but i really don't like altering old toys, or at least ones given the designation "my collection", and in truth it seems a temporary fix, as I'm fairly certain that this is a sign of the plastic breaking down on a chemical level. which POTF2figures? i may have some donors- the only Star wars I'm into are the original lines (and films), though i have a shitload of figures spanning all of the lines languishing in my shed.

Try handwashing with Dawn dish soap then let air dry. That has worked for me. It gets rid of the stickiness but I'm not sure if that will prevent it from returning.

I bought an 83’ Gung Ho from a vintage toy shop the other day and when I got home I saw that there was a crack on the back of the left shoulder.
This got me thinking so I started to look at a few figs in my collection and I saw that a few had shoulder cracks but only on the back. Have any of you guys experienced this? |
