It comes as a surprise to nobody I hated Zanya. Pathologically uninteresting bargain basement Zarana who had no purpose in the story. Except to make Zartan look like a geriatric old timer, and by proxy making everyone else look like old has-beens, as well. Classic example of the DDP well of ideas.
"Previously unseen kid of a main character" is probably on page one of the book of crap ideas. Has there ever been an example of this trope in all of fiction that didn't stunk to high heaven?

True, they had a bad habit of “everyone has adult children syndrome.”
But she had spunk. |

Since it hasn't been that long since I reread the entire Hamanverse, I am going to try an experiment and reread the DDP series at the same time as I go through the the continued Hama stories. Even though it seems a lot of fans dismiss anything that is not Hama, I personally like some elements of the DDP continuity like the creation of Zartan's daughter. I also thought that the DDP Cobra Commander was closer to the version in the Resolute cartoon than Hama's take. I won't dilute this thread with continued reference to the DDP series, but I think it will be an interesting contrast. For the record I also enjoyed the IDW verse until they decimated it with the Hasbroverse and the dumpster fire series that followed.

I am going to have to disagree in part. I liked seeing the young green shirts and the way they viewed the Joes as legends. It also gave Beachhead more of a drill instructor role where he could use his surly attitude to whip the recruits into shape. Yes, it made the Joes appear older, but even Robin had to grow up to be Nightwing, and Batman didn't suffer because of it. Anyway, I said that I wouldn't hijack the thread so I will stay on topic for future issues.
G.I.Joe were now a bunch of celebs. What happened to the grunt in the ditch who never saw honor or glory? Fk it, G.I.Joe are Hollywood superstars. And the greenshirts.. hey, let's turn all our popular characters into geriatric boomers. No one's gonna mind, right? We've got bona fide superstars like private Mike S. Smith in his generic overalls to fill in the gap. Everyone's gonna love our new creations! No? The greenshirts turned the Joes into a jobbers. They were now the same incompetent crap as SHIELD or other comic book "elite" organizations. IDW of course took this to the next level. Hama's random civilian could take out a platoon of IDW Joes. Beach-Head isn't a surly drill instructor, either. This isn't Sunbow. He's a pro who loves training and never gets mad, not some stick in the ass PMS sourpuss. Batman didn't suffer because they didn't draw him to look like Stallone in Rambo 5. Of course DC is a bad example, because their universe turned into such a clusterfunk they had to blow it up.

One of my all-time favorite Cobra Commander quotes, along with "I give you the same choice I give everyone else. Join me or die."
