In last issues preview of this cover, the US flag is on the Troopers helmets. On the actual cover (seen here), it’s shrunk and moved to the lapel area. Why the change?
Anyway, the Duke action scene was pretty sweet. And Hawk in a cobra trooper outfit was great also. And then he blows away the trooper in the police car?! Hell yeah! G.I.Joe is hardcore (for) now! The mission is code name: Annabis. What’s that mean again? To remove the head of the snake or some such. Very nice. Then Roadblock chops up some bad guys!? Holy crap! Mainframes scene is pretty sweet too. Although he looks more like Wildcard. The stalker story begins well and the Snake-Eyes and Scarlett (and Timber Story) does well too. The writings solid in my opinion and I love the art. Miss the head Cobras here but there just wasn’t any room for them. |

Great cover, and pretty good story idea. Unfortunately, the solid concept is pretty much ruined by modern "cinematic" storytelling and writing for the trade. There's so much story to be mined out of Cobra being in charge and the Joes being on the run, but it doesn't really get explored. It's just Duke riding around in a car and Snake-Eyes beating up ninjas. A 4-5 issue story at modern pace is like 1 and a half issues in the old comic, not enough. The cliffhanger to this issue is also very clumsy and meh, because only the trade matters. Shame, the potential was there.
Hama also seems to be just a tad rusty with the Joe concept. Like why is Stalker suddenly in the Hindu Kush with some redshirt on a sniper mission? What the hell are they even doing there? Sniper-scene sounds good as a concept, but this should be a Low-Light deal. Would be better with an entire issue devoted to it, too. In general the cast consists mostly of Team Obvious, but since it's the return of the series it's the right call, IMO. Duke finally becomes a major player in the series. Well, major at standing around a desk, but it's something, anyway. Computer age also leads to Mainframe becoming a main character. Breaker's death really leaves a void, I feel this would have been his spot. On a positive note, it was nice to have the G.I.Joe comic back again. The voices and most of the tone are what they should be in Joe. SNAKE-EYES body count returns. He immediately pads up the numbers with 9 dead ninjas. Body count is now 171 kills at an even 100 appearances.

I took Stalkers new roll as being with the regular military or a “regular” special ops team since the Joes were disbanded.

"Coordinated Order By Righteous Americans" that's pretty funny.
Outlaw/rogue US military teams throws out the Rules of Engagement. Hmmm...GI JOE sounds like vigilantes now. Thought Hama hated those. Mainframe in Dialtone V1 colors? Roadblock makes mince meat out of Cobras. Snake on a shingle for lunch at the mess? Scarlett mentions Ambush, but... Snake-Eyes can now kill red ninjas so quickly they won't realize they are dead yet! No Rock-Vipers in the Hindu-Kush, because screw anything made after 1986. |

I hadn't remembered the tone of this issue. Pretty great.
When Joe was cancelled in the 90s, I had a very long time to tell everyone who would listen about how "in the end, the Joes lost and the Cobras won." The Joes were disbanded right after Cobra conquered a bunch of European countries. While that status is never really addressed in these issues, it feels like a continuous continuity to me to see Cobra activating hard in America too during this time period. I'd like a figure of this Hiss Driver / Crimson Guard. Why isn't Cobra always this proactive? Red Ninjas should always wear night vision for aesthetic purposes. They look cool. However, they still are employing hordes of twenty-something green belts with incomplete training. Red Ninjas are less skilled than a Cobra Viper (including Firefly). Oh no! They got Stalker using a suppressed pistol in the desert. I can't remember how long this Cobra-as-American-security story lasts but I hope it's at least 3 issues.

Since it hasn't been that long since I reread the entire Hamanverse, I am going to try an experiment and reread the DDP series at the same time as I go through the the continued Hama stories. Even though it seems a lot of fans dismiss anything that is not Hama, I personally like some elements of the DDP continuity like the creation of Zartan's daughter. I also thought that the DDP Cobra Commander was closer to the version in the Resolute cartoon than Hama's take. I won't dilute this thread with continued reference to the DDP series, but I think it will be an interesting contrast. For the record I also enjoyed the IDW verse until they decimated it with the Hasbroverse and the dumpster fire series that followed.
