Here’s the last batch of photos for this whole mini project. While repainting my second Cobra Guard’s webgear and other bits from tan to gold, and waiting for different paint apps to dry, I thought I might as well paint the Officer webgear that originally came with the Dollar General figure.

Apparently I had already painted and used most of surplus stock. Regardless, I had the one and figured someone would be interested in this look using the figure’s original accessories. Note that as mentioned in a previous post, there are a bunch of secret little mods to the body to help with poses. gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0723dc by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0723db by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr With this temporary look//swap, I realized I had new “fresh” version of the original 1982 three Cobras, which was neat, and wanted to do something special photowise for these guys. Rather than trying to recreate the explosion cardbacks as I done back in December 2018, I remembered those three-pack ToysRUs Senior Ranking Officer packs and the special packaging used for those. gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0723cc by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0731bi by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr To my surprise (and dismay), the only one of those packs I bought back then was the Hawk//Duke//Grunt pack. So to ebay I went, and after a few weeks of searching for a decent price, I was able to secure the final piece of this project. gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0731bc by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0731ab by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Working with the glare of the clear plastic was difficult. And with the stark contrast of the lighting setup used (to try to cut down black box glare), use of red background, and post-processing effects, it almost looks like the guards are cardboard cutouts placed in the packing. In picture below, I toned down the processing. gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0731be by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr And then for the final photos below, I went a different direction in post, looking for a stylized//muted//painted comic cover feel: gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0731bh by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr gCobra_25th_82-3p1_2019-0731bg by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr And portrait style: 2019-08-14_12-07-45 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr |

Don't ever stop. Your creations are absolutely stunning!
WIth the above Cobra commander, is that Kantor blue? Are the cobra logos waterslides? Looks amazing! I have an Ultimate CC, and it makes my OCD tingle that he doesn't match my blueshirt 30th troops. After seeing yours I may have to paint him! I'm curious, how posable are your painted figures. I've not managed to learn to avoid joint rub completely, and it;'s putting me off painting any more figures. Yours all look amazing, and don't seem to be shaved/sanded much if at all on the shoulders? |

Maj Bludd v10, which are the same as Maj Bludd v09. Both have different knees pieces, and both don't look great on CC. So Maj B's knees were heated and swapped out for this CC's knees. May only work when using the 50th black version since the knee back discs are a little large--the rubberiness of 50th figures is actually a good thing for once (though causes a little bowleg effect). Feet are kinda thin and long and might also be swapped out at some point.
Awesome work with the updated figs in the TRU packaging!!! I would have emptied the store of that exclusive if the figures looked like that!!!

Beautiful work, bro! The blue with the gold is really nice! The packaged figures are a nice touch, too!

Yours all look amazing, and don't seem to be shaved/sanded much if at all on the shoulders? I don't always do joint sanding, especially on darker figures. Personally I don't know if I care, but since I've been doing photos publicly, I try to do more. Also with lighter figures, I will do try to stay with Tamiya or Testors. If I have to use Citadel or Vallejo, I will do the works: shave down with exacto knife, sand down with sandpaper (coarser grits, then finer grits, then buff with felt or dryer sheets), then primer, then color paint, then varnish/clearcoat. Given the amount of coats described above, I work the joints down I lot more for this process. It's all real annoying just to avoid a little paint scratch a mostly hidden areas, really. Quote:
Thanks!!! One more question about recipe. Where does the strap crossing CC's body come from? I think I've seen it in customs, but can't remember seeing it on a figure.
Awesome work with the updated figs in the TRU packaging!!! I would have emptied the store of that exclusive if the figures looked like that!!! The chest cross strap was cut from the belt right at the top of the belt. Also, it was glued down to the figure only at upper back. I didn't know where I should permanently attach it to the belt--so it's not attached there, and moves around when twisting the upper torso. But its mold is right on, letting it look attached visually. Quote:

Thanks for the clarification mate. On your advice I picked up Testors (Model Master) and it gives a great finish and feel to the figures, but Joint rub is a real problem and I can't seem to sort it. I've ruined quite a few fodder figures over dremeling and sanding, and still not being able to get the paint to stay put. Do you figures get posed or played with much, or do they mostly sit static? Given your huge assortment nd your groups I assume not?
My Joe universe is skewed heavily to the Cobra persuasion, and Kantor blue on your advice is a superb match, but it feels really sticky and wrong and rub is awful. I will try the Tamiya Flat Blue I guess. Does anything else come close to the colour of Cobra Blue? |

For CC this time around, I went with Tamiya Flat blue, for better binding of the paint to figure with no primer applied. Tamiya and Testors seem a lot more durable against paint rub than Vallejo and Citadel, especially without primers and varnish or clearcoats applied after. Also on CC, I do believe I sanded down the shoulder and elbow joints, mostly to give myself some chances to refine my technique. I don't think I needed to sand down much. Part of this is because all the parts were made for each other (no frankenJoeing), and part because of that more rubbery plastic they used in 50th releases.

The strap is from the DG CC, used previously in the comic 2 pack with Tripwire I think. The one with the sword. Azrael13 had used this, but his was black, and I wonder if he was able to bypass painting this by using the figure that came with those weird Best of 4 pack figures. There's a lot of weird mold flash on the strap, and with the extra painting I required, mine doesn't look as clean as his. Thanks Todd. The more good comments I get about the packaging, the less stupid I feel about spending $30.00 for it. It's nice to have untouched original 25th style versions of these guys, but not $30.00 worth IMO. Yes, I'm cheap, and that's probably while the line is now dead...

Shoulders and elbows only, not had knee problems so far. I can't seem to find a happy medium of either under trimming/sanding and having rub, or over trimming/dremeling and making it look awful/hacked up. I mean they are all find till they are moved, then they chip. All tips are appreciated, yours look amazing.
