IMHO, I feel its too late to jump on the 80's Nostalgia bandwagon. Production should already be wrapped and a date for this year should be set. However, given how fads and trends work...I believe that "ship has sailed". Time to sit down with a new creative team and do it...the difficult way.
So wait 2 years and start building the creatives in charge of this project. In 2020, begin anew and *start from scratch* - build an entirely NEW GI Joe franchise. Do not "reboot" any of the so-called "iconic" characters because ultimately none of these guys are that! Rather go ahead and create NEW CHARACTERS that are INSPIRED (key here!) inspired by the older characters, that we all know and love. For example, create a new GI Joe blacked-out commando/ninja...except he can remove his mask and can freely speak lines. Do you get it? The inspiration can come from the 80's ARAH. The team should be Americans, however, they can colab with international forces in their mission against an all new (new-age) "enemy". The bad guys don't have to be called Cobra and they don't have to be referred to by the "T-word". This is a modern enemy that uses different methods to attain their goals. (social media? and certainly hacking) However, they can operate and have all the zaniness of the 80's Cobras that we love. For example, they can be led by a set of twins in charge of a red clad army, maybe? Of course, a biker gang (inspired by the 'knocks) could be so awesome and original AF! IMHO, that's how they should resurrect the franchise we love. |

Ballistic (Flint) Harpoon (Torpedo) Mayday (Scarlett) Black Dragon (Snake Eyes) Sgt. Savage (Sgt Slaughter/Captain America) Quick Stryke (Stalker, maybe Footloose based on his character traits) MetalHead (Mainframe/Breaker/Dialtone) Freight (Roadblock or Heavy Duty) Lt. Stone (Duke) Times are different though people's opinions can change. It may have been too soon for GIJOE Extreme, but in a couple of years a new crew might have a better chance since GIJOE is not in the public eye.

I've said before, but in my Joe universe, it's always 1980-something.

Remember in the comics Marvel years where Stalker, Snake Eyes, Tommy before he is Storm Shadow and three other LRRP members serve in the Vietnam war? Never for get the best Joes, Cobra, Dreadnoks and the whole entire vehicles and plasyets all based on the vintage toyline 1980s.
Remember the characters of 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and rest of the late 80s and early 90s. The best Joes vs cobra 1982-1985 then 1986, 1987-1989. We wanted a live action GI Joe TV series online like Netflix, YouTube and maybe HBO. If anyone wants to see all the Joes vs Cobra that include the Dreadnoks set in the 80s inspired and a homage to the comics and cartoons of the 80s and all look very close to toy counterparts that first debut in 1980s. Got to love the details of the Joe, Cobra, uniforms, gear and all the weapons all based on every action figure of 1982-1985 include 1986 and rest of the 80s. Has anyone seen X-Men Apocalypse before? That character Psylocke from the Marvel X-Men comics and cartoons. In the movie X-Men I had mentioned the details of Psylocke outfit that did look very close to her comic book counterpart, in 2006 X-Men Last Stand there was a character Psylocke to doesn't look anything like her comic book Psylocke. Watch a Deadpool movie check out the character Deadpool costume design they got it right. Maybe they should get most of the characters of GI Joe, Cobra, Dreadnoks and rest right for a live action TV series. The two films Rise of Cobra and Retaliation the character design didn't look or hardly anything like the classic character like example Ripcord from ROC and Ripcord based on 1984 action figure/cartoons Sunbow and the comics by Marvel in the 80s. I sure enjoy seeing all the characters of the 80s and 90s especially as the toys the old cartoons and comics in 80s because the way they look.

OG13 and at a maximum 82-86 characters only, and must stick to the cannon of the comics, and it would be an absolute hit. Those I suppose they then had to pay Mr. Hama, Hasbro and Marvel a big chunk of money.
I agree they will tend to mess it up with over PC and diversity nonsense, but GI Joe was way ahead of its time with Scarlet and Stalker right from the start. Nothing was taken away from these strong characters and they were respected equals and important to the story. The cartoon was way less PC than the Comic, spirit being a prime example of that. Make the whole thing very 80s retro and it would be an absolute hit. Someone pitch this to Netflix, they seem to take up tons of random writers scripts and run with it. A series would be best of all. |
