I hope I am not out of line or making any kind of big deal by posting this, I was just morre curious how fellow tankers feel on the subject of scalping .
I recently came across someone who was looking to sell a clear wraith here on the tank, I thought great I can pick one up at a reasonable price, so I contacted him. *MOD EDIT - Please do not post PM info in public so at that point I began to wonder, when is it scalping? now did this individual pay the premium? or did he pick it up at his local toy store? now I know that it is a chase figure and fairly hard to get and for that I am willing to pay that "premium" that everyone has to pay for those chase figs but, I really feel that at some point you really must consider value paid vs value wanted when you make the decision to charge for an item. I know that it was probably out of line to write what I esponded with but I truly felt that it needed to be said, I am a firm believer in being very straight forward, so I replied with the following. most ppl who wanted them that badly, bought them long ago, I dont mean to offend but, I thought since it was the tank t would be a reasonable price, you know joe hunters helping out other joe hunters, not scalping to make as much as possible, I think if you want "ebay" prices you should just post it on ebay, like I said I really dont mean to offend, but it is just how I feel." now if I am wrong and using the term "scalping" was in bad judgement, then I am sorry ,but I think when you buy an item at an average price, and charge a overhead mark up cost( about 10-30 %) for it, to make money it is not scalping, however, it is scalping (at least to me) when you buy an item (or all the items) at an average price and charge a mark up of 40+ % to make the maximum amount of money possible it is scalping |

I have seen this as well. People tend to get caught up in the "it's worth____". The figure is worth what the seller wants it to be. Personally, I think paying hundreds of dollars for a figure that cost $10 or $12 is silly. I'd pay about $30 for a Wraith, which is more than 3x what it cost. That, to me, is a fair deal. The seller has the right to ask whatever they feel is a good price, but often the prices are silly.

Boba, at the end of the day, people can/will charge what they want for an item. It's just a fact of life.
My stance has always been this: Too pricey? Move along. Someone else will have it at a price closer to what you're looking to spend. Although we have a tight knit community here, it shouldn't come as a surprise that someone will ask the going price (well, the price they saw on eBay) for an item. That said though, this isn't eBay. If folks are looking to cash in, then post the aforementioned item on eBay and hope for the best. I don't have a clear Wraith either and desperately want one, but am not paying more than $20 for one. Yeah, pipe dream, I know, but that's just me. I don't knock people for trying to make a profit, I just take my business elsewhere. ;) |

well, I think there is a fine line between selling and scalping, if you were to buy an item for 10.00 then sell it on ebay w/ a startingbid of 10.00 you are losing money, but if the item bids up to 500.00 you cannot help it, thats the averave price, there is nothing you ca do, however, if you buy said item at 10.00 and start your bidding at 50.00 .........its a totally different story!

what you are talking about, isn't scalping IMO. It's a very difficult figure to find, and it's not being made anymore. Is selling a mint Starduster figure for 75 dollars considered scalping?
Scalping would be when new figures are going for higher prices just because they aren't being found anywhere yet. BBTS and other online retailers who purposely charge much higher amounts on the army builders because they know those figures are in more demand. |

eh, I say get what you can. if someone is willing to pay for it, then why not try. if you don't want to pay that then don't buy. though that being said I don't want any negative karma so I try to keep things as low as possible. not a reflection of here but a lot of time people will really low ball you. sad that we've lost the art of negotiation.

I call anything scalping where you sell an item for more then the maximum price on the e-tailer sites.
Say can get the Bazooka Trooper on BBTS for $9.99 + shipping, I consider scalping selling it for anything higher then that. I also consider it scalping to purposely buy up a ton of 'em with the intent of selling 'em for alot over. It's okay if you bought extra cases and then decide you don't want 'em, to turn around and make a small profit, but to buy the extra cases with the intent of making a large profit... This relates to anything that was recently in the store or still in the stores.

People like that want to get as much as they want. They get chase figures and think they won the lottery or something.
I saw this all the time when I was collecting McFarlane Sports Picks. Especially with local hobby shops. They are the worst. They'll tell u up front, "if u don't like my prices go some where else" which I think is poor customer service. |

My rule of thumb when selling to fellow Tankers:
1. What I paid for the item, including tax + 2. Approximately what I spent to get to where the item was purchased (much less now than 6 months ago) + 3. What I paid for packaging and shipping + 4. A minimal finder's fee (time and effort) = Total Anything more than that is better served on ebay than the 'Tank. |
