Oh please, no one can compare to what I had to go through to get to JoeCon.
I had a 10:45pm flight out of LAX on American Airlines. Everything was fine until I got a half a mile away from the airport. I’m use to the traffic near the airport, but good lord, was everyone in Los Angeles heading to the airport? Finally arrived to the terminal with the line from hell. It’s now 10:10pm and my flight takes off in 35 mins. I ended up missing my flight. I was directed to the wrong line and by the time it was my turn to be assisted it was 10:35pm. Plane closes the door ten minutes before take off and I still had to go through security screening checkpoint. The next flight to Atlanta was at 9:50am the next morning. Spent the night at the airport. Around 6:00am I check on my flight to see that it’s CANCELLED. WTH?!? I go to check on what’s going on & the next flight from AA was at 4:00pm.The guy can sense the frustration from me and before I can say anything he finds me a flight on Delta Airlines at 8:30am. Fine, cool, all set just gotta get to the other side of the airport check in and I’m gone. After checking in they tell me the flight’s been delayed to 10:40 am. ARGH!!! Fast forward half a day later. I finally arrive to Atlanta now I have to get to the Greyhound Station to catch my bus that I had to change for a later bus and it leaves in 30 mins. I’m good it’s only a 12 min ride from the airport. Upon arrival, another line from hell. Luckily I had done everything on my phone so I just show them my ID & boarding pass from my phone and I’m good to go. There’s one clerk behind the desk & a security guard that doesn’t know squat. I go outside where the buses are and overhear someone also heading to Tennessee that I need to be on the bus heading to Detroit. Driver scans my phone and tells me he’s not going to Chattanooga. It’s 7:15pm and that’s when my bus leaves. Finally, I find a guy who’s got his $#!+ together and tells me my bus has arrived yet. Waiting around my bus is finally on the monitor that it’s arriving at 8:30pm. I’m at a bus station with about a hundred people in humid Atlanta and THERE’S NO A/C!!! Bus shows up late of course, arrived in Chattanooga around 11:10. Got to my hotel and passed out on the bed. At least you’re nothing paying California gas prices. Made me sick seeing the most expensive in Atlanta at $2.59 while in Cali it was $3.69 (the cheapest) when I left. So you hush and fix your gas gauge The bottom line for me deciding to skip this year was it’s less accessible location. Of course any flight can get delayed and cancelled but when you have to travel via indirect paths or with multiple connections because the city doesn’t have a major airport it becomes a problem. If you have your convention in an accessible destination (like Orlando, Dallas, Indianapolis, etc.) then someone coming from across the country can still reasonably travel in less than a day. So for instance with a direct flight I could have left LAX early Thursday morning and even if there had been a flight delayed or cancelled I would have been there in time for package pickup that night. Likewise I could have enjoyed the Con all day Sunday and still gotten back Sunday night. But with these destinations like Chattanooga that’s not possible. If you want to be there Thursday night you have to waste an extra day and leave Wednesday morning then spend an extra night in the hotel for no good reason. And forget getting back to LAX on Sunday if you want to enjoy the Con on Sunday. You might catch one flight to Atlanta but no way you would safely catch that second flight to L.A. So then again you end up spending Sunday night in a hotel for no good reason. That’s 2 extra nights in hotels for no good reasons, spending more time waiting/traveling to the Con than the actual days of the Con. And 2 extra days away from work accomplishing virtually nothing. That last one in particular was sadly the dealbreaker for me this year as I otherwise would have loved to have gone.

That sounds like a nightmare! Chattanooga has a airport and 15 min drove to hotel. There were mo connecting flights? I know chicago has a direct flight. Sounded like all that was missing from that flight from hell was john candy showing up in a station wagon offering a ride to the train station lol

Makes me glad it was only an eleven hour drive home...lol. I left after the last panel, went through two heavy downpours on the road in TN and KY, and got home at 1:47 AM. Great convention, so sad it was the last one....

I wanted to give my self enough time to get to the airport. The first Lyft guy cancelled on me when he saw he had to drive me all the way to Hartsfield/Jackson Airport. The 2nd driver was cool, boy did she haul @$$ to get me there with more than enough time to make my flight home. To top it off my flight landed 20 minutes ahead of schedule.

I flew Dallas to Atlanta and drove a rental car to Tennessee. It wasn’t bad but definitely not a great logistic location. The location itself was great. Nice scenery on the drive and plenty of Southern Hospitality. Every local we encountered was friendly and helpful.

The southern hospatality was everything and more ive ever heard. Random strangers at a bbq spot just walked up and welcomed my wife and i to the city and suggested other places for us to visit.

It's kind of maddening that they lead into the last 12-pack with a claim of wanting to "fill a few more holes in people's collections" when they instead spend at least a third of the slots on international figures and not a single one of the 12-pack is filling any holes in the '82-'89 years of ARAH, plus they waste two slots re-doing a pair of Slaughter's Marauders that have already been done in Modern Era.
