Cover doesn't do much for me. It tells us what the issue is about, though. Very informative.
Ron Wagner's first (?) regular issue. Looks good. Mission arises because Dial-tone and Mainframe can't figure out terrordrome components. They suck, I guess. Also, Hawk informs the team that 2 high ranking military officers and the PIT died for nothing. Destro changes in the men's room and throws a good suitcase and his other clothes away? Couldn't he wait until he got home? Flint and LJ meet the first of many British stereotypes: Jingles and Sgt. Day. Too bad they didn't meet actual action force members. *RAF MUSEUM EXPOSITION* The first reveal of Destro's private Scot's guards attired army. Destro's grandfather liked men in skirts. It's a wonder the bloodline continued. And Sgt. Major, whose only name is SGT. MAJOR. They went along with the "imposter" until he meets the "real" Destro. Had the bobbies 'iding in tha bladdy bushes even! When someone says "You won't get away with this, whoever you are!", responding with "I already have!" might just seem suspicious. Maybe it's just me. We could spring him from local police legitimately, or we could commit a felony on foreign soil! "We don't have days!" Um, why not? They see two Destros and assume there's hurried time table, not even knowing who is who and who is up to what. LJ's filecard says she doesn't go for that rubber mask stuff..except here, when sure looks like she did with that granny disguise. She is looking good in this issue as herself, though. So Cobra wanted Destro out of the way, to steal back the terrordrome plans. Uh...and they've taken their time doing that....seems like. ALso, how did Cobra know the real Destro was still alive and would return? Let's destroy a museum piece in some nonsensical plan that could've gotten people killed. Destro's men can't hit anything and they assume whomever wins a fist fight is the real Destro. The big reveal...fake Destro was Major Bludd! That makes. No. Sense. Serpentor has a certain Master of Disguise and his brother on tap. So why do the absurb cartoon thing of having Bludd impersonate Destro? Does Major Bludd have the same build as Destro? And there's that little matter of his missing left eye. Destro's eyes are visible through his mask. Maybe Zartan lent out some holo-tech to Bludd. Yeah, that's it. Where's my no prize! Was this part of Serpentor's convoluted plotting, though? We never know for sure because Bludd is, aside from a Cobra Island cameo, not really seen for like 50 more issues and Serpentor's plotting doesn't interest Hama. Serpy and Bludd never have a scene together. Destro pisses off Flint by kissing Jaye's hand...with a metal mouth. Flint is easily annoyed. LJ doesn't know she's Destro's cousin...oh, that's the cartoon. This would've been a better issue if Destro had kicked Zartan's butt, but Hama decided Zartan is too good to lose to anyone that's not a ninja. So, overall, I find it has good art but a so-so plot, because the Bludd thing doesn't worth without no-prize explanations, and the timing is convenient that real Destro arrives before Bludd completes his mission and that the Joes are involved. It's like it's a comic book! |

I'm beginning to wonder if you even liked the comics, Sean
Maybe you should have stuck to the 'Nam. |

I think all our snarky comments come from a place of "love". Think about when you get together with a group of old friends, you constantly bag, make fun, bring up stupid stuff, point out flaws and generally just cut up on each other. You do it because you are friends and know a lot about each other. I know I do it. As long as its done in good fun. Transversely I don't know anyone who gets together with friends or loved ones and just tells each other how great they are. That gets hard to do after a while. Just my two cents. That's all it's worth.

I always thought Bludd was acting independently in this one, trying to become a player again.
Side note, I remember when this issue came out, I was at a wedding reception that was in an upstairs banquet room of a small, one hallway shopping mall. We kids were running up and down the stairs and through the hall between the closed stores while the adults drank and sang Mony Mony. One store had comics in the window and I saw this issue. The cover implying Flint, J and Destro fighting together blew my mind. It was killing me the entire night to be separated from reading this story by a chain link door, all because stupid stores have closing hours and stuff. And being a kid, I did not have the means to simply go out the next day and buy it. I think it must have been weeks (felt like it anyway) before I could hitch a ride with an adult to the grocery store. Remember buying comics at the grocery?

I didn't like this issue a lot as a kid. It featured a small cast of boring and predictable stars and dull guest characters. But now that I'm skimming through it, it's actually not bad. Cutting a deal with an enemy who's half-honorable to get the bigger fish is a pretty cool premise. Unfortunately, this issue also signals a major turn for Destro into the great philanthropist of the later run. The issue is made worse by hindsight, but still works here as a fresh concept. It's actually an interesting parallel how both CC and Destro turn over a new leaf after their near-death experience. Makes sense. Destro swung too far in the other direction, though.
Is this storyline the first time the comic mentions Destro is Scottish? Whose idea was that, anyway? Didn't the show already establish his nationality prior to this? Curiouser... Was it a big shock to you guys reading this fresh that Destro was euro-trash? Yes, the Joe tech team is useless. Mainframe clearly has no idea what to do with his Commodore. Breaker should be there, I bet he'd recognize all the fear wave modulators. Tally ho, squiffy! I say, these SAS chaps don't quite drop the custard on bally tenpenny. The October Guard would make them grab their egg-and-fours and deliver the bacon. Might have pranged the kite right in the how's your father and flipped over on their Betty Harpers, too! Prison guard line reveals Destro is a major celeb in Scotland. I'm surprised Destro's guards hadn't noticed their laird had gone up a few octaves and started talking in an Aussie accent. I wonder how many of his own guards Destro killed in this issue? If Bludd was part of Serpy's convoluted plotting, it sorta backfired. If Bludd hadn't infiltrated the castle, Destro wouldn't have given the Joes the plans and eliminated the Terror-Drome threat. Actually, do the Joes even figure the secret out ever? In #68 the fear waves still catch them off guard.

Statement of ownership in the letters page. Joe was hitting 350,000 sold copies. Aubrey will be lucky to hit a 100th of that.

And once the secret is out, who'd ever buy anything from Cobra again? Hmmm...I guess that's a nitpick for a later issue. Since I hate the comics so much...lol. Also, people still go to Chipotle. What's a little food poisoning or mind control? |

The Nam was a cash-in on a national tragedy at a time when everyone was cashing in on the Vietnam War. The only thing worse are violent action comics that are just advertisements for war toys! LOL. |

And even he was going through a slow patch. Lad's not even from Glasga!
There was Kenny Dalglish, but you guys wouldn't know 'im. I wonder if Destro is Celtic or Rangers? Sheik Faoud Ibn Sirhan, at the very least. Minister Bakana has shown some interest. Possibly they can get comrade Lin Wu Zing on board.
