Special Missions time, at last. I must admit I never really considered the title on par with the main title. The quality was a lot more inconsistent, and the contrast between Whigham and Trimpe is palpable. Still, it certainly had its moments.
Not much to say about the first edition (I fear this isn't the last time I'll say this about a SM) except that yeah, it's so intense it'd never get published today. Blowing up little children or body-shaming? Don't know which side is more villanous. Pretty boring Hama default-roster, too. Only Beach-Head brings some spice. So Roger is ready to go down with the ship, but what were the other two planning to do? Parachute out at the last second Cobra-style? Quote:

Next up, indeed. I forgot when I listed the missing Joes of the mission that Thunder was also not present, no room for Slugger on C-130. And the other reason was that he had not been introduced yet. His toy was no longer shipping by the time he appears! Ouch. Artillery is a tough sell in a comics mag that favors covert missions.

The Slugger is still there on Cobra Island, it sinks into quicksand or mud. Maybe the Dreadnoks can pull it out and make a Thunderslug or something.

A Thunderslug! I like that idea! I noticed in 77, following the invasion of Cobra Island (I know, I'm reading ahead), that Hawk made an emotional appeal to the Jugglers, saying "How can the good of the country possibly be served by letting the incompetent and the irresponsible go unpunished?" All I could think was that "incompetent" and "irresponsible" pretty much summed up Hawk's performance in the Springfield debacle!

Duke was clearly made the fall guy for Springfield. He was demoted into a random grunt afterwards.

John Byrne cover is ok. I don't love the look of the Noks nor their penchant for covers. However this comic seems like a big commercial for the Thunder Machine and other new vehicles so it fits.

Monkeywrench's bold debut...on the cover. His actual introduction is like a year later.
Zandar and Zarana don't have their family shoulder armor yet. Cheap joke about Zarana by Buzzer. Ha! The Dreadnoks know Thrasher already, thought he wandered off in the swamp, but later Zartan claims to have abandoned him. Zartan is a jerk, as if we needed reminding of that. So Zarana is unaware of what's going on with Zartan but just happened to have already intercepted dossiers a from federal courier that will help her rescue him.? Holy plot convenience! Swampfire's a new JOE vehicle is amusing, given all the new stuff being intro'd. However, it requires a few cheats, extra seats and wheels underneath. The JOE Pit skeleton crew, 2 drivers never introduced before and Sgt. Slaughter. Still no Grand Slam or Wet Suit. Storm Shadow stowed away in the Swampfire's..."chain locker"? LOL. So did they leave the electronics locker open or did Thunder do a routine check? It's not clear in that panel. It looks like there are motions line of the door opening...I dunno. I DUNNO PRIZE? Cross Country! "If some one calls you a hill-billy and you get offended because you're really a redneck...you might be a redneck." Flint mentions getting Ambush laid, but he won't be introduced for another 75+ issues. Zartan is still pissed about that motorcycle. Get over it, dude. Alpine does some comic book stuff and grapples the swamp copter. It crashed and Zandar goes flying into the rotor blades, resulting ina gruesome scene...oh, I guess not. "It's Thrasher's THUNDER MACHINE!" Congrats for the name drop, Zarana, too bad you couldn't recall the Swampfire's proper name before it was wrecked and will never appear again. "Eat our dust, Joes!" Dust in a swamp, Ripper? Idiot. Smokey and the Bandit stuff as Thrasher tilts his ride to the side and knocks off Slaughter's hat! Hama is really dissin' the sarge. Missed op for the refinery to be ROXXON Oil (from Marvel univers). Busting through a chain link razor wire topped fence or a moving train does not harm the THunder Machine's passengers clinging to its sides. Hold tight on those footpegs, Dreadnoks! Zandar gets one over on Slaughter. Slaughter lost his magic hat and eventually disappears after this. Coincidence? Letters page: YES APPEL IS DEAD. Confirmation the animation model sheets are drawn by Russ Heath. It was a decent action issue, the Joe get pwned, as the kids might still say. Kids are retarded now. And they don't have comics to read. Coincidence? |

Another Byrne phone-in Dreadnok cover.
I already warned you guys I'm not a big fan of this issue. The lamest Joes versus the lamest Cobras, pretty much. 1986 is starting to show it's a bit uneven when it comes to new figures. I guess this issue does its job, though, because as a kid I sure didn't notice what pieces of crap the Havoc and Swampfire were. Loved the first page back then. Storm Shadow actually hanging out with Cobras, even if it's just the Dreadnoks. Ripper needs some sunscreen, dude looks like a lobster. Funny how the Dreadnoks think they're on the same side as the guy who tried to kill their boss/brother. And holy crap, I hadn't even noticed until now Stormy is like a foot away from the guy he wanted to kill. Hama should have milked it more, IMO. The storyline is dropped with barely a mention again ever. All the Joes who were too lame to get to go to Springfield are revealed to be back at the Pit. Except Grand Slam, who's too lame to even be allowed at the Pit. Those were some killer dossiers Zarana stole, they even had Tollbooth and Thunder. That's more than even Hama seemed to have had. Thunder seems miscast here. Maybe Mainframe could've been used as the tech guy? Tollbooth has no problem with both Jaye and Sarge having trouble recognizing him. They're like that all the time. Horrible shooting in this issue. Roadblock distinguishes himself in particular. Dude fires like a hundred rounds at a Thunder Machine that has more parts covered by Dreadnoks than armor. Maybe leave a couple of them home, BTW? Or might as well bring in Monkeywrench. Cross-Country sucks at football. The quarterback running with the ball free on goal? That never happens. You can tell there ain't an NFL team in Alabama. I'm from Europe, so I seriously have no idea if anything in this paragraph was correct. Slaughter went quickly from an ass-kicking badass who beats up everybody to a buffoon who gets punked out by random hill-billies at gas stations. His Joe career is finished. Special Missions #1 on Wednesday?
