Oh, yep...you're right. I was picturing the scene when Baroness lifts his head up and you see a tear in his balaclava above his eyes. Well I think, anyway. I'm remembering back right now, too lazy to get out of bed and verify. ;)

Cover is a good action cover. Nice job on the likenesses and weapons. Solid cover. The horizon is awful gray near Cobra Island.
I like the inside cover page a lot. Great seeing all the Joes in action. Beach Head is checking the Whale's cannon barrels to make sure they are not hot. Barbeque using the missile launcher as an observation deck. Off panel Doc-Fuse is probably sitting in front of one of the big prop fans. Doc is so very observant. Draws an exactly correct conclusion and then disregards it with a "Naaah!". He should have followed that line up with something wittier like "I need to get my eyes checked out when I get back to base" or "something must be wrong with my glasses." Or He could have called Doc-Fuse away from the prop and got a second opinion. Cutter sees very well with his binoculars. He narrates every move of the ninjas. Blam! Blam! Blam! Splatt! |

Cover art gets the Devilfish's appearance better than Whigham did.
We are the point where new Joes have to debut in every issue. So, barely any intro to Wet-Suit and G.I. Firefly...er...Beach-Head. Cutter fails to destroy the Cobra copter after firing at least six heat seekers. Someone needs to be fired. Imagine Baroness, Destro, Buzzer and Mindbender just dying right then and there. Fire reflected in Buzzer's glasses is great, they did that in a recent Fear the Walking Dead episode. Yeah, Cutter can see all. Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow kill a few hundred more Cobras just trying to leave the island. Both Flint and now Doc ignore what they see. America's Best? That's where they need to go for new prescriptions! Baroness decides to blame Mindbender's cargo just in case they don't make it, even though the mess is on her. She manages to do millions in damage to Cobra's air force. Cobra would've better she had crashed into the damn ocean. Crash Crewman sold separately. But hey, someone needs to clean up Baroness' mess. If they made a 2005-2006 comic pack it would've had two crash crewmen (who appear in two panels) and a boring repaint of let's say Beach-Head. I don't know why Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes are so determined to leave at this point. They could kill literally everyone on the island and claim it for themselves. "Ripcord's" extraction via the Dragonfly seems improbable. Maybe the Tomahawk should've appeared sooner. Since Zartan is elsewhere, Destro takes over as Cobra's resident jerkass. "Your precious crates are safe and sound, Dr. Mindbender." You know, Destro, as one eccentric weapon's maker to another, you should show him some RESPECT. Later he disses Mindbender when he goes out on the hydro sled. At least the doctor takes an initiative, metal mug! What are you doing, talking smack with your crash crazy girlfriend. Cobra Commander doesn't mention that Appel is dead, and will never mention him again. Cutter suddenly becomes the bad cop and asks Hawk if he should rescue Snake-Eyes. As kids we'd be like "GO HAWK!", but as adults we all know Cutter is right, right? Snake-Eyes' illegal vendetta stuff is bullcrap, if anyone dies on the mission it's all on the mute masked man. Cobra Commander leaps out this HISS in manner that would likely hurt him when he landed. There's a lamprey cameo...not on the hydrofoil, though. Funny the hydro sleds are called anything but that, makes the toy commercial aspects of this issue difficult. "Snake-Eyes man the turret"...but don't shoot at those hydro sleds. WTH? You killed scores of cobras, but you let them torpedo you! I've learned this from GI JOE, if I'm ever on a boat/ship, I'm gonna check the chain locker for hidden enemies or sleeping firefighters. Shoot the torpedo...good thing Torpedo's not on this mission. Capsized those Cobras! Funny, in a later issue Dr. Mindbender says he cannot swim. So I guess the Eel saves him here. A few pages of slaughtering poor marine life. Shark Week vs GI JOE. Rescue-mission launching, torpedo shootin' Hawk suddenly gets defeatist when it comes to rescuing Storm Shadow...I think he wanted the ninja dead. Baroness shoots Stormie, doing something right for the first time since abducting Dr. Burkhart. The irony is that she turns traitor later. Also, she should've emptied her gun into his body and run over him with the tank a few times, then tossed the body to the sharks. He still would've come back, though. Firebat's turn blue in flight. Who knew? Colorist George Roussos, that's who! Firefly is still in charge of Springfield security...or is he? The actual security sends him and Dreadnoks because they are expendable! (Who in Cobra isn't?) Yeah, "Ripcord" is in bad shape. That would normally have him sent to the nearest army hospital, right? Nah, let's drag his butt back to the Pitt. No letters page, but Captain American hunts for Scourge. That was a good story line. |

Anyway, this is a great issue. There's lots of action, loads and loads of toys, and some dramatic moments that advance the plot. The 'death' of Storm Shadow was a pretty pivotal moment that appeared to resolve his storyline, although I am happy he returns a few months later. There is some silliness, including the scenes where Doc ignores Zartan, they shoot the torpedoes, and they somehow get Zartan into the Dragonfly. But none of it is a total dealbreaker. It's easy enough to ignore. And some of it is just so characteristic of GI Joe. The cover is well-drawn, and it reminds me of one of the toy illustrations where every GI Joe vehicle has like five or six guys hanging off the sides (even when it makes no sense at all). Come to think of it, it looks like they were deliberately reproducing the Devilfish's box art, with Beach Head as driver and Wetsuit hanging on. I had to laugh out loud at the sharks vs. ninjas page. This is the kind of over-the-top lunacy that makes GI Joe what it is. This is absolutely the kind of thing we were doing with our action figures. Fun stuff. |

I have no idea how anyone would hang onto a Devilfish at least for very long.
The animators decided it was more dramatic if Cobra had some base rising from the water. |

Read the "death" of Storm Shadow in the last Action Force weekly comic. Felt like part of my childhood died reading it originally. Sure the US Joe stories continued to be reprinted in the UK Transformers comic and Tommy was resurrected, but wasn't the same.

Another great issue. I love how Hama just changes the Joe team in the middle of a storyline. No time to hang with one crew more than two issues.
Second classic ending in a row. Just when you think SS has made it, in comes Baroness to cheap-shoot him. God how I hated the B as a kid! Always shooting all the cool characters without permission, and being an all-around jerk. Now she's a favorite. Snake-Eyes body count continues this issue. Amazingly, I only count two kills. One dude at the beach, and another when they steal the Hydrofoil (sharks don't count). Everything else is off-panel. Stupid comics code! 35 kills in 31 appearances, but the last two issues were underwhelming. It'll take another while before the body count returns.
