When I went to the toy store on the days previous to the Christmas in that year from the mid 80's to choose my gifts and I returned home with a couple vehicles and some figures and among that bunch there was Barbecue. The only thing I remember is a chose him for its look, it looked cool to me and in fact it is a cool figure but since I was not an English speaker for those days I did not understood what was its role inside G.I. Joe.
Some time later I understood he was the fireman of the team. It is ok to me having a fireman in the team, in fact I guess there are military firemen but the only thing that does not fit in my mind is taking Barbecue to field operations. Why would you need a fireman in a operation intended to destroy the enemy's assets? I think a more appropriate role for the character would be preserving G.I. Joe facilities so he could be more useful being deployed in the Headquarters, the Tactical Platform, the Mobile Command Center or the USS Flagg. When you play do you take Barbecue to field operations? If yes, what is his role besides avoiding your vehicles to get burned after being shot? |

He's good for grilling out, cooking hamburgers and brats for the team.

I treat Barbecue as a US Army MOS 12M, a firefighter responsible for protecting lives and property from fire.
Barbecue would supervise his fellow Joes while they perform any necessary firefighting. He should perform inspections to minimize fire dangers, or perform operations necessary for fire protection. He would assist with most salvage operations above the surface of the water, or on land. He could respond to hazardous materials spills, thus his usefulness to Eco-Force. He can also assist with the rescue of most victims and provide first aid to them.

In my Joeverse, Barbeque is actually a Fireman with the Airforce. There are several characters like Barbeque, Airtight, etc. that IMHO wouldn't be as active in operations, but would be a type of specialist they keep on the team for when they need them. Also given that other branches of the armed services have firefighters and chemical warfare specialists (like the Airforce), it looked like a good opportunity to balance out members among the various branches of service.

Someone has to put out the fires of destroyed Sky Strikers on the airfield after Cobra strafes them. Also eventually someone has to put out the fires on burning cobra troopers after charbroil/blowtorch set them on fire or as a foil for Torch

Sure, the Air Force has the Para Rescue, but that would thrust him into a specialized role that he never could previously fulfill. We might as well make him a ninja if we give him that much of a boost. Since I don't want to make Barbecue a Marine, I will just keep him as a soldier, as I suspect he was always intended to be.

I just use a custom and he is a grunt, the red head curly haired MTF worked for me. But I do that with a lot of guys for example, the con Zombie Fighter Outback is Snow Job in regular gear.

I use him as a Tactical Entry / Forcible Entry breaching specialist. That'd use all his skills as a trained Fireman.

After the joes bomb and attack cobra there is sometimes collateral damage. Once the area is secure and cobra is neutralized barbecue leads a mission to help and save any civilians in any burning buildings or homes.

Well Fireman, safety, Haszmat, hazfam and hazcom trainer. I mean I just play so its whatever but him and Blow torch are both firefighters AND incendiary weapons guys, I use them as ordinance handlers, missile loader guys, I use them to man turrets on vehicles, artillery guys. I have a whole team of the green 50 BTs and BBQ and BT lead them in these roles. Sometimes my motivations for how I set up stuff are SOOOO not military accurate informed or anything I use BT and BBQ with missiles because so much of the classic Joe stuff has these loud yellow and orange colored missiles and those two guys are those colors so in my mind they look good together deali8ng with that gear.
