I don't really "play " like when I was a kid, setting up massive battles with shooting noises and dialogue. Instead, I make up small scale missions with some of my favorite characters and a vehicle or two. For example, when I first got the Eaglehawk/Tomahawk a couple of years ago, I set it up to re-enact Special Missions #19 so that I had Lifeline, POC Jungle Duke as Muskrat, and a movie Roadblock in back and Wild Bill and Lift Ticket up front. I love to sit outside after a busy day and display my Joes like that.

I got back into GI Joes because of my daughter. She is a fan of all things sci fi and action and sort of took possession of my Star Wars figures. I bought some GI Joes on Ebay for her, an old 12 in footlocker full of figures in various degrees of repair. A few months before I retired from the service, she wanted to build a fairly large wooden fort/diorama for them. That got me looking for ideas and "furnishings" on line and came across this huge customizing culture. I had no idea.
Now, I play by customizing and building. I am currently, and have been for several months now, working on a TRU/chap mei tank recovery vehicle, and when I customize, I need a story as to why the vehicle needs these mods, what the threat is, what the capability is and how it defeats the threat. The funny thing is, I actually did this for several years in the USMC. I was in a "think tank" type organization that worked on capabilities and we would develop scenarios and then apply our current and planned capabilities against the scenarios, so in some ways, GI Joe as a kid prepared me for real life military, of course, I was put into this organization after being sent for graduate education, not because I had an impressive knowledge of GI Joe. The difference between real life playing and GI Joe playing is only the threat. We never developed capabilities to take on Cobra developed zombies. I hope we don't regret that in the future. |

I'm nobody's wife, but if I was, I'd have no problem with my spouse playing with Joes.

Hahaha My spouse would have to accept my geeky quirks too. But I understand where you guys are all coming from. I don't have room to display my Inhumanoids collection, but I do have one.

I'm a non-opener, so I just put them in Protech cases like Han Solo in a little carbonite prison, and hang them on the wall (the card art and file card has always been G.I. Joe's strongest part, seperating it from so many other toys).
But even as a kid, I didn't play with them very much. I'd mostly try to design elaborate sets, like you'd see in a Sears Wishbook lol. |
