That would be sweet. I've been using the McCraken body for that.

So the "Vintage Collection" is basically a rebranding of the Black Series with retro packaging, correct? Not terribly exciting from a pure product standpoint, but could be a good marketing opportunity. Are they going to make a push to get these figures into more retail locations?

At least we won't have any TPM figures this time. If we get Cassin and The shoretrooper on a vintage style card I would be thrilled.

A lot of people are declaring victory on this but I want to see the actual figs. Hasbro has been really clear that 5 POA sells well for them and has a high profit margin. I think a lot of collectors see this new vintage collection in their minds as dozens of new items but it could be a small line.

My Walmart restocked with more Capt Phasma wave. So I picked up a FO Stormtrooper for $5.48.

Okay. . . . . let's use Walmart's price to calculate the price increase. New price- Old price= Difference in price $15-13= $2 10% of 13 = 1.3 15% of 13 = 1.95 Wow? The minimum price increase in two years is close to 15% for 2 years? 7.5% average price increase a year? That's a bit steep yeah? Considering the price went from $10-13 in a 2-3 year time frame, which means the previous price increase was New price- Old price= Difference in price $13-10= 3 10% of 10= 1 30% of 10= 3 . . . . . . . 30% in 2-3 years so 10% per year on average? Umm, I'm pretty sure inflation is at 2-3% so that's sure some crazy price increases. |

Dang $15-20? That's about the same price as an rc vehicle. . . . .

Umm, I'm pretty sure inflation is at 2-3% so that's sure some crazy price increases. Toys, and particularly action figures, used to be what are called "loss leaders" at Wal-Mart/big box retailers. Items that the retailer is willing to take a hit on profits in order to get a parent buying SOMETHING in the hopes that they will then add something with a higher profit margin...it's basically psychologically proven that once you're buying one thing you're far more likely to buy others. So the price of action figures was kept artificially low for several years. Once Wal-Mart abandoned the "loss leader" mentality for action figures the prices started shooting up, and by then it was basically a whiplash effect of both "Catching up" to a more realistic price, and retailers pushing the prices for a higher profit margin. Eventually it reached a point where Hasbro and the retailers realized that it was costing nearly as much to create a super-articulated 3.75" figure as it was a super-articulated 6" figure, with the difference being that a 6" figure you could sell for $20, while a 3.75" (at the time) was closer to $10-12 with a much smaller profit margin, so with the addition of Hasbro's efficient packaging design, 6" figures suddenly became the "go to" as far as super-articulated figures went. 3.75" SA figures basically became exclusives-only. So now that they're coming back, retailers are going to still want to make their margins on the SA 3.75" figures...so that means prices closer to what the 6" figures cost. Star Wars in particular also has a hefty licensing fee, which may well have gone up when Disney bought them. This isn't defending any of this, by the by, just kind of explaining how we got there. |

I'm glad vintage is coming back but I've tempered my expectations. I think this will be a side line to the Movie of the year 5POA one. Limited to 2 maybe 3 waves a year with at least 50% repacks. I also expect the MSRP to be no less than 14.99.
Based on the lead time, Hasbro has already locked in whatever figures are coming out in 2018. If the quality is as good as the last Vintage line, I'll be supporting it. Welcome back to my wallet Hasbro. |
