Don't care as long as they don't change the scale or quality of my action figures. At the end of the day all I care about is the action figures. If I get a movie or cartoon that's a bonus. If I have to have a movie to get figures I'll accept it.

I agree with JJ. There are many different expressions of Joe that would work as a movie. Hasbro and Paramount are off on the wrong foot again, though. Add to that the need for huge merchandizing sales to support a film, and the tendency of filmmakers to need to make up new stuff for more ownership "credit" and I am expecting another high-priced fiasco. (See Jem, Battleship, and the release experience of Retaliation.

Jem had a budget of $5 million -- hardly high priced. |

They already tried "changing it up" for modern audiences in Rise of Cobra by ripping off Matrix and X-Men movie costumes and Iron Man battle suits. Didn't work.
Beauty and the Beast just proved that if you copy a popular cartoon from the 80s or 90s photo-realistically into live action, you will have a massive success. When you "change it up" you tick off the original fans and you bet on a version of your concept that has NO proven track record. Sounds like the next big mistake by the typical Hollywood morons. It's strange that G.I. Joe is one of the only properties still treated with this snobby attitude when Marvel, DC and Disney have all figured out that Hollywood "changing up" the original source material is not what anybody wants to see. I absolutely think Joe has room to grow but the international audience is accounting for more and more revenue and I don't want to see the property pimped out into a "UN" to appeal to other countries. I don't think it is required since Joe has always been very multi-ethnic and multi-cultural. |

I tend to agree with you. I just don't see why a faithful Joe movie wasn't attempted. At the same time I love the brand and I love Sigma 6, which many of the older fans didn't like.

Marvel's success blended stand alone character movies together. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk all got stand alone movies then we're combined in The Avengers. With X-men you have Wolverine.
Hasbro needs to play their Ace of Spades in Snake Eyes and make a reboot based on him initially. The essential story elements are right there in the comics. 1) He goes on a rogue stand alone mission to rescue fellow future Joes who were disavowed after being caught in a foreign nation on a secret mission. Remember the Stalker, Snow Job, Quick Kick arc? This time North Korea perhaps? Definitely keep Stalker and add Scarlett in these roles. Gotta have the love interest right? 2) Flash backs to when Snake Eyes was a field operative with above said Joes in peril. Like the LRRP story line but this time in Iraq/Afghanistan. Perhaps in Iraq or Afghanistan said flashback crosses paths with a foreign mercenary or two who are obvious easter egg plugs for future villains like Destro or Major Bludd since we have file names. 3) A nemesis can be based on these Flashbacks as well. And it doesn't necessarily have to be Storm Shadow. Maybe ISIS or AL Queada had a bomb maker who became Scrap Iron. 4) Snake Eyes might have to have dialogue though, albeit just initially. Perhaps the movie's climax wounds him and he receives scars and damage to vocal chords? A katana slash from Storm Shadow, shrapnel from Scrap Iron, etc. Finally, because his rogue mission was so successful the US decides to create a super secret team of special forces. Movie ends with dossier with "GI Joe" stamped across front. Roll credits.

The special thing about Joe is that you never know which characters you'll see going on the next adventure. And they all had drastically different backgrounds and personalities. That's what separates Joe from all the other action series.
The most memorable characters from the old media were largely the ones that either got a "starring episode" or were a frequent recurrent character (Duke, Flint, Lady Jaye, Roadblock, Sgt. Slaughter in the cartoon for example). And from a toys perspective, it becomes even MORE an issue. Hasbro no longer has the justification of producing 40 figures per year with year 'round availability. With fewer "production slots" than 10 years ago, the more characters in the show, the less likely it is that Hasbro will ever "complete the cast" (see how many Decepticons are still left unproduced in the Warrior price point for Robots in Disguise, yet the entire cast of Autobots have been done at one point or another). Again, I just don't see how the "old ways" really work in today's retail and consumer environment, and that's one of the major issues Hasbro's likely addressing with whatever the new push for GI Joe takes.

You all crack me up. In past threads where the question is "how would you save the brand/franchise", the one thing it seems that everyone can agree on is a need to appeal to a younger generation. Then, Hasbro mentions catering a new movie Millennials, and suddenly everyone is disgusted and upset. Well, what did you think the younger generation was? Plus, keep in mind, if you were born in 1982 (the year the 3 inch line was released), that means you most likely graduated high school as class of 2000, and that makes you....you guessed it, a Millennial. Millennial is a broad term that covers nearly 2 decades.
It is possible make a modern Joe movie that appeals to the younger generation without it being crap. It doesn't have to be a film where Duke is trying to save a local Whole Foods while Flint is stuck breaking up a fight in line for the latest Apple product. As for plot, I think a snake eyes centered film, or a global outbreak of some sort, which have been mentioned, are both solid ideas. |
