Psst. Ben Kenobi is still a white, male jedi who trained Anakin Skywalker and was eventually killed by his former Padawan, is he not? He hasn't been the victim of some wild sex change operation like poor Dial Tone nor did he lay out in the sun too long like old Ripcord. My point was that Star Wars characters have not gone through the kind of changes we've seen in the GI Joe line. At least when I see my nephews pick up a Ben Kenobi figure I'll know that it's just a younger version of the old guy I played with as a kid and that the backstory of the character wasn't completely rewritten because someone decided to relaunch the line and market it to a new generation. Perhaps that's why SW is so popular, the story is timeless and the history of the characters doesn't change at the drop of a hat. They may add more onto the story but the basic story is and always will be the same.
As for the Transformers, I couldn't care less because I do not buy any of the new bastardized toys for myself or any of the kids in my family. I'll buy any classics they put out that actually resemble the classics but this new stuff can sit and rot on the shelves for all I care. Oh and the success of the original RAH line came about because of the cartoons and comics. It's pointless to argue that point because just about every successful toyline in the 80's had its own cartoon show to promote it. Oddly enough, Hasbro could not reproduce that 1980's success when it introduced the Spytroops, VvV or Sigma 6 cartoons/episodes/whatever. Whether you admit it or not, it actually took Hasbro marketing the modern era 25th anniversary toys to us 30-somethings for the line to finally take off, again. Now that we've breathed life back into the line, Hasbro is free to take it in whatever shi**y direction they want. I won't buy it but then I don't blindly support the GI Joe brand to begin with so that's no surprise. I'm assuming you believe the Dark Knight is equally as bad as the new G.I. Joe direction because Batman in body armor couldn't be any farther from his original incarnation. if not, you are again awfully convenient about what change is and isn't acceptable. paulpratt, this was more what I was talking about in regards to trying to relive your childhood through your children, not simply getting them cool toys. I like that set, I think I'd use the troopers as a squad leader.

Darth Vader was changed from an imposing, villainous figure to a whiny bitch. Han shoots first. the Sarlacc from a venomous pit that left its danger to the wild of your imagination to the brother of Little Shop of Horrors. yeah, Star Wars hasn't changed. your very selective on what you want to define as changing and staying the same.

How will someone explain to their child, who might happen to see an original cartoon episode, that the dial tone they see had a sex change operation in the new comics? Sorry son but it's 2009 and I think it's time you learn to be a little more tolerant of these alternative lifestyle choices. Blah. If for nothing more than consistency sake, the basic backstory on established characters should never be changed. Doing so makes the whole line seem far too incongruous and over time causes folks to become more and more detached. Oh and I really am not a big Batman fan so I couldn't care less whether the movies of today match the early TV shows or movies. Hell, I don't think I was even alive when when that show was on TV. I also never got into the whole super hero comic book craze as a kid so, /shrug. |

LOL. Han shoots first. Is that really the best you can come up with? Come on man, I am talking about the basic backstory of each character and you're talking about a specific scene from a movie. You might have had a point if Lucas had done something like making Ben the father of Luke and Leia instead of Anakin or having Padme give birth to two boys instead of a girl and boy. He didn't though. Everything in Episodes 1-3 (with the exception of Jar Jar not being beheaded by some out of control battle droid tank) happened just as we expected it too. Anakin started off good and gradually fell to the dark side. You call him a whiny bitch but that bitch and his troops took out the jedi temple, killed children, dismembered one of the most powerful jedi in the galaxy, and supposedly hunted the other Jedi to extinction. All of this and he somehow survived having all of his flesh burned off. Sorry but I'd say he was a pretty imposing, villainous figure by the end of the third film and Lucas did a great job of setting him up to be that evil villain we grew up watching. The same cannot be said with respect to GI Joe.

If for nothing more than consistency sake, the basic backstory on established characters should never be changed. Doing so makes the whole line seem far too incongruous and over time causes folks to become more and more detached. and, yes, Darth Vader was so imposing with his whiny "I hate you!" to Obi Won and the laughable "Noooooooooooooooooooooo!" at the very end. shuttering in my boots. and I doubt (m)any children are going to be watching a 25 year old cartoon (or reading the comic) in place of a new, modern cartoon, so your example is so minimal it isn't applicable. again, your examples reveal the weakness in your position. were you confused by how G.I. Joe was so small when you played with him when he was originally a large figure, or did you simply know they were different toys even though they share the same name? sure, you can make up an example to back up your position, but absent of any real significant confusion that alters a child's ability to enjoy their toys, it is just that -- made up. I'm sure you're still in therapy trying to reconcile how Hawk's hair could have been blond in 1983 but brown in 1986. do you sit in a room all alone with each figure in a hand, looking at one and muttering "if this is Hawk," and then to the other "than how can this be Hawk, too. I don't understand." Last edited by gunslingercbr; 01-06-2009 at 05:43 PM.. |

I'm not sure if my interest in this line is fading due to amassing so many figures so quickly or due to the lack of any compelling future product.
I'm holding out on judging the movie or its product too harshly until I see more. We may get a few decent vehicles at least. However, the lack of any interesting upcoming figures really is turning me off to this line. We've seen some listings for upcoming figures, but we haven't seen anything coming up soon. The 5packs are looking lame (with the exception of a few nice updates in the Joe one). 2packs aren't looking so appealing (I'm really getting turned off by these). Future vehicles pushed back to an unspecified date. Lack of pics of the next singles as well. Is it just me, or is anybody else losing interest in this line? |

Whoah. I'm on thread page 21 and I had to check to see if I was still in the right thread.
How the heck did this star wars debate come from Resolute troops? Anyway, I like em, even though they're repaints, and I'll get 'em. These are not must-haves, so i won't scramble for them, but I'll get them if I find them on pay day.

This is nothing compared to the "Trukk vs. Munkey" Transformers debates during Beast Wars, the more current Animated vs Classics debates or even the 12" vs 1/18" Joe debates.
Besides, it's not like Hasbro has announced that the 25th line has been cancelled in favor of Resolute. A different flavor for some to savor, as it were. I guess it's easier to accept the reinvention of a toy line when you're a TF fan as well as a Joe fan, since Transformers has changed with practically every line since G1. Some changes were drastic and others were mild, but if that doesn't get you used to it, nothing will. Or maybe it's because I don't take it as a personal insult when Hasbro puts out toys that I don't like. I just don't bother buying them. |
