Probably my all-time favorite issue, and I think possibly the first GI Joe comic I ever got (fresh off the rack at the local drug store). I read and re-read that thing dozens of times, trying my best to keep it in decent shape. Excellent battle action incorporating land, air and sea vehicles. Original '82 Joes plus Firefly, Destro, Cobra Commander; can't get enough. All these characters with all these vehicles fighting across the swampland reminds me of what it was like when my brother and I'd be playing with the toys out in the yard. If only we'd had a Rattler! I remember making one out of cardboard and a paper towel roll just to try to recreate the attack on our WHALE! Pure fun!
This issue has everything I look for in a GI Joe story, and set a standard for me that few other issues matched. I was completely hooked after this one. Last edited by ranquet; 03-07-2017 at 12:15 AM.. |

One of my favorite issues at the time. Looking back, I think it wasn't so much for the story itself, but for the introduction of the WHALE. I remember being obsessed with getting one. It's not a bad story, but better ones are to come.

The Whale was such a great toy. My younger brother had it. I was so jealous.

That brings up an interesting point and a current one as well. Having the toys in front of him was and still is very inspiring for Hama, and it makes me wonder if the best stories did not evolve from that situation?
I know some of my favorites stories involve the introduction of new characters. Issue eleven for example. Then 22 with that fantastic Duke and Roadblock entrance and the debut of the Tanksmasher Rattler prototype. Cover Girl on the target range and later in DC. Zartan messing with Firefly. and more that we have not even gotten to yet.

All true about the vehicles . . . but I still don't get why Hama didn't include Copperhead when he introduced the Moccasin.

The moccasin is a smaller vehicle I wonder if adding a figure was a later decision by Hasbro after they had already submitted the vehicle to Marvel to use in the comic. Somebody ask Larry and Kirk... hmm ok nope but one interesting thing, it just says "Cobra Pilot" in the toy fair catalog so Copperhead did not have a name yet. That could be a reason why Hama did not use him, and by the time he could, that ship had sailed? Toy Fair catalogs - 3DJOES

Larry had clearly misplaced the figure. Just like his Snow Serpent fig.

The Michael Golden cover is awesome! I love when it's an actual scene from the book. Better if had been Firefly in the turret but who cares. I love the blast effects. As Judge Elihu Smails says, "Top Notch!"
I have also always like the page one of this issue. The art of this long shot of the dock is good and I love the locals making fun of the Joes. I kinda get the 'Southern Comfort' or 'Deliverance' feel to it! I guess they havent seen the likes of Roadblock in these parts cause he sure shows them barnacles. lol Billy! Who is the white guy, doctor looking character, carrying the IV along side Deepsix? Doc-Fuze Patching the Whale's skirt with bicycle tire repair kits. Hama is great with these little touches! CC's speech to Springfield definitely shows Hama did not write down to kids like he has said. I want someone to do a book or mini-series on the Cobra Media Dept creating those mindless sitcoms for the network. That could be good. Siegie code name "Smith". Huh? Cutter is not so bright! Punching the guy with the metal head in the face. Poor R.L. and his Deputy. Although they sure get around quickly. Maybe time to hang up his badge. I have much more respect for Trip-Wire after this issue. He was going to take one for the team before RoadBlock interceded. How about that throw by RoadBlock? To sum it up... The art was better than some of Springer's previous attempts. I loved the action and especially mixed with the humour Hama added. How many kids told mom and dad they wanted a Whale after this issue? I so love that toy. |
