No, that film would probably bomb ferociously. It would look and sound like a giant ham-and-cheese sandwich. Millennials have no interest in or awareness of Sunbow, and Generation X isn't going to go see a Sunbow nostalgia-fest in large enough numbers to make up the difference.
Added to the fact that this weren't even the Guardians in comics. Too close to Cap, which is why Diana's movie is WWI period piece as opposed to sticking the source material in that regard. Quote:
Here's the blunt reality that Hasbro doesn't want to seem to deal with. 1) The boys that played with JOEs as kids are now men in there 50's, 40's, 30, and possibly late 20's and maybe their sons, nephews, and cousins. 2) Since Hasbro seems to think that A Real American Hero is the only viable part of the brand, they need to let that part of the brand grow up. 3) G.I. JOE isn't relevant. As I once heard Joe Quesada say on Kevin Smith's Fat Man on Batman podcast when they were making the movies and the tv shows they knew they had to cater it to the core audience. If I do a search, (which I'm not,) I said the same exact thing about a JOE movie, that they had to do mature military themed project about group of American special operators that's defending human freedom against COBRA, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. The naysayers then listed various reasons as to why it couldn't be done. Only to be proven wrong mainly by Marvel Studios and to a lesser extent Time Warner. Personally, I think G.I. JOE would work best on HBO, Netflix, or Showtime with a budget the comparable to that of GoT and The Get Down. Tell a story the story of political intrigue, why C.C. is pissed off, and just how far reaching COBRA's grab is and how they manipulate world affairs. Let's see how the JOE team was formed as a result of a COBRA attack and how the government is trying to play catch up. Let's see the Barnoness' conflicted loyalties between Destro and C.C. She's in love with Destro, but identifies with and almost idolizes C.C. How she has to walk a fine line when Destro's and C.C.'s goals are diametrically opposed. The JOEs have a lot of stories to tell which is why I'm kinda like confounded as to why they feel the need to anchor the JOEs to these lesser franchises. G.I. JOE worked best when Larry Hama was doing character driven stories and using either real world tech or tech that was in development stages. I'm not going to knock the upcoming JOE project and I wish it the best. However, I will say that JOE movie coming out wouldn't be the movie I would make and if I were in a decision making position, I would have kept the JOEs separate.

Something else the JOEs desperately need and would be appreciated in an animated, t.v. or film version. An enemy to fight other than COBRA Command.

I'd prefer a reboot, with no forced shared universe nonsense with all these dumb Z-list forgotten toy lines. The elements required to have G.I. Joe exist in the same universe as all that junk are the exact elements I don't want to see very much or any of.

I just want The Rock to play all the parts, like Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor.

As of today, October 20, 2016, G.I. JOE A Real American Hero isn't relevant and prepubscent aged boys don't give a fuck about a G.I. JOE. However, his dad, his uncle, and older cousin does. The future of this line lies with us, the JOE fanboys. What happened in the 80's was the confluence of the right events and isn't going to happen again. Marvel Studios, (especially with their Netflix series,) has shown what could happen when you treat a property seriously and with respect. Not only will you make your core fan base happy, you'll draw in causal fans. Hell, say what you will about the DC movies, though underperforming B vs S and Suicide Squad were among the highest grossing films of the year and Luke Cage crashed Netflix. The problem is Hasbro is in the same spot that Warner Bros. and Marvel were in 20 years ago as it concerned comic book movies. "Oh the source material is a comic book so the film has to be this." The thinking is, "Oh the source material is toys so the movie has to be this." If Larry Hama thought that way then G.I. JOE would have been like Sectaurs, M.A.S.K. and C.O.P.S. and a 12 issue run as opposed to 12 year run. That's not to say that Hasbro shouldn't be trying to sell their army men. They should, but me with my layman's opinion think that their best bet in order to get their film and t.v. division on a solid foundation would to make [I]G.I. JOE film or t.v. project that charters to the core demo. And no that doesn't mean a live action Sunbow series. To dothat would be the equivalent to making an update version to Adam West Batman. The talent is there. Is goes back to when I say that Hasbro needs to let the JOES grow up.

Agreed. Just like we desperately need a Quick Kick in BDUs, COBRA needs a tank that isn't a variation H.I.S.S. model. Truth be told, the kids of today need their own version of G.I. JOE, not a remixed version of a 30 year old brand. The talent is there. Is goes back to when I say that Hasbro needs to let the JOES grow up. Some focus-group-tested multicultural teens discover some magical fairy powers and use them in the fight for social justice! As usual, the enemy will be big bad corporate America just like every other movie or TV show Hollywood has spooned out in the past 20 years. |
