Yeah, but it is called a "sled" on his package (don't make a joke of that ); plus, what I really want to know: would it really be useful in his job as a medic? The only way I can see it working (according to the file-card) is by him steering the dinky machine with one hand and carrying a wounded Joe on his back. Is that really feasible in a combat situation?

Probably not. I don't think I ever used it, except maybe to pose him on. I suppose it could work if it were a bit larger so he could actually put a wounded Joe on it. Otherwise, I'd say that Stretcher's sled ranks up there with the big missile launchers that were all the rage for a while.

Wow. Just read the original Cobra Trooper's file-card (the one that looks like a Viper) and it blew my mind. Is the Cobra Trooper v.1 the same as the Cobra v.1? I always thought they were the same, but the Cobra's file-card says he is the equivalent of an E-4 Specialist, but a Cobra Trooper is "lower than a Viper!" Vipers are the equivalent of an E-1 Private, if I understand the original Viper's file-card. So, I guess the ranking goes from Cobra Trooper, to Viper, with a chance to become a Cobra or a specialized Viper. Once one becomes a Cobra, perhaps this can lead to becoming an officer?

Which Filecard is that? There are so many now.
I think it's assumed that Vipers were meant to replace the typical Cobra Blueshirt trooper. However, over the years they have sort of coexisted side by side as separate units or different outfits. My verse... You start out as a lowly Trooper (Blueshirt) digging ditches and basic military Drill. You want a little more challenge you join the Viper Corps which are the equivalent of say Rangers or Marines. From there you move to the other "Viper" Specializations if you want even more of a challenge. But Rank is still a part of the organization. "Officers" just tend to be the most ruthless troopers. But a Cobra Officer sitll outranks a Viper, who is not an Officer.

Even though he (and the Cobra Officer v.2) were created from the Viper mold, this 1998 figure is the bona-fide 1st official "Cobra Trooper" (v.1) in the line. We only had "Cobras" and "Vipers" before that. The original file-cards made it clear that the Vipers were the "lowest" and the Cobras were the equivalent to Sergeants. I've always gone with that, but my discovery of this later file-card is making me rethink things. Last edited by seaneley; 08-12-2015 at 04:58 PM.. |

I don't know where it ever says Cobra's are Sergeants although the 6 pack had Sgts. in there based on sleeve rank.
Personally I treat Cobra Trooper V1 as a Viper since he looks like a viper and is the only version who doesn't look like a blueshirt. Those weren't great years for filecards. I tend to follow Cobra Trooper Version 3 filecard. The DTC version: Cobra Trooper (v3) G.I. Joe Action Figure - YoJoe Archive It's a combinations of other cards, but "They have to work their way up to become Cobra Viper Forces." So this sums it up best for me. But be it Viper or Trooper they all attest to being the bottom-of-the-barrel, Nameless Faceless legions, Basic Fighting Group, Bottom of the Pyramid.

The original Cobras' file-cards made it clear that they were ranked "E-4 (or equivalent)." I interpret this as an obvious reference to these soldiers being Sergeant grade. Since Hama wrote these, I personally kind of consider them "canon." |
