That's the underlying problem with brands like GI Joe or Transformers that have had such varying interpretations and evolutions over the years: you will NOT please everyone with a feature film.
Retaliation FELT to me like a GI Joe film. Was it a great film? Eh, not really, but the same is EASILY said of much of the GI Joe content fans hold in such high esteem (ESPECIALLY the Sunbow cartoon). It doesn't matter WHAT ends up being done with Joe 3. Unless it is a "Watchmen" style shot for shot remake of a comic story (even then, a LOT of fuss over which one is worthy to adapt), there is going to be a vocal group calling it the worse thing ever. Depending on who you ask, the "real" GI JOe was a generic 12" military action figure, not the Halloween hold outs we know from ARAH :p I figured someone would peg me with the 12" Joes. You know what I mean though. There is no 12 inch story line to follow. If there is I missed it. I had a couple of them when I was 4, but once A Real American Hero came out there was no going back to boy Barbie dolls. I agree many of my favorite Sunbow cartoons are almost unwatchable. The driving force for both the Cartoons and Comics was how it related to the toys. TV is much more accessible than a Movie in the theaters. So playing a cartoon right when a kid gets home from school when his brain is looking for pure entertainment is genius. The Cartoon is what made the brand a huge success, no matter how bad Shipwrecks lines were, although I think that is what made it great. Resolute was a great great example of how to continue the epic in a way that was true to the story. That has to be 10x harder when filming a movie though. Renegades was a cool way to change the story with a modern twist. ROC just had too many changes that didn't follow the orignal story coupled with a terrible script. Some pretty good action sequences though. I agree Retaliation was better but not by much. How do you fix the 3rd installment? Maybe go A-Team or KNight Rider; campy, silly no one dies, I mean the cartoons always seemed fake, but at the same time it was light and reassuring. Good guys always win. Honestly if they call this one Pursuit of Cobra and pull all the stops in the figure departmenet with great updates, new characters (Then you can't offend the purists),and fun vehicles at a decent price, 5POAs POS's and an upscaled GIJoe BLACK both you might have something there. Too bad there won't be a cartoon though.

If they must go this route in GI Joe films, then at least let Hasbro design the toys for the vehicles first & CGI a more realistic version of said toy into the film later. The first film had a few neat vehicles as toys, the steel crusher & the snow-mobile things to be exact. But everything else from the first film & everything released from the second film kinda blew.

It would be nice to get some more movie-accurate figures for this next film. There really was no excuse for not getting any last time, since the movie was delayed nearly a year. The Roadblock, Duke, Flint and Snake Eyes figures looked good. But we really needed a better version of Cobra Commander. And Joe Colton. They got the head sculpt nailed for that, but messed up by not putting it on the ROC Hawk body.

Hasbro has not forgotten G.i. Joe after all. Like Hell!
So G.i. Joe still has a comic book & there maybe a 3rd movie. Lets see some real news on a 3rd movie. They been saying there's going to be a 3rd movies for months with no real news to go with it. Hasbro Has killed G.i. Joe No Cartoon! All must no Toy line! |

I hope GI Joe 3 is more like ROC, I liked the more epic scope and the tone of the ROC. ROC was not perfect but it was more fun that Retaliation. I also want...NEED the return of Scarlett and The Baroness.

You would think that hasbro would be able to leverage their relationship with marvel and Lucasfilm to find someone to make decent movies but i guess not.

Any G.I. Joe is going to be "good" G.I. Joe at this point, imho.

Funny how we constantly rehash the same ideas, concerns and observations regarding Joe's predicament. I guess its inevitable on fandom forums, but wow.
The problems of ROC, the Renegades "hiatus", the Great Delay of Retaliation, the post-Retaliation fizzle-out, shitty 50th 1.0...the Clubization of the forums...it all kinda broke my Joe spirit. Honestly, I'm really not expecting much from GI Joe in years to come. I hope Hasbro surprises me to the contrary. But that's just hope. And that's feeling pretty damn hollow.
