I love opening 20+ year old sealed things. They should be opened. A box is a box. Plus it's great to watch the MOC/MIB collectors writhe when it's done. It's nice to see it be put to its purpose after decades rotting in a cardboard coffin.

Xerofall, you make some of the greatest looking customs I have EVER seen. Yet it’s too much work to restore a vehicle that has been roughed up by time to its former brilliance? It really doesn't take all that much time to clean it up.
This is just a big difference of opinion. It just saddens me. These items have survived DECADES still sealed and deserve to be preserved. Thankfully there is a happy medium: Just buy well preserved examples and leave the sealed ones sealed. There really is no need to open them. As I said earlier, I have come full circle on this issue. Here is a thread I started over two years ago when I first got back into collecting JOES. I now have hundreds of figures and dozens of vehicles including some MISB and MISP Joes. Open it!!! - YoJoe.com Forums Like I said, I totally regret opening that Adder. At first I felt attacked by some of the responses, especially by VSHANE. XEROFALL, I hope you don't feel attacked as that is not what I intend (especially given the fact that you and I know each other, have traded and looked out for stuff for one another) I am not attacking you, merely trying to persuade openers to keep the sealed, sealed for the love of JOE and the historical side of the toy line. Read my first post in that thread, I had a blast at the time opening it--I definitely understand both sides of the issue intimately. I don't feel attacked, I've been on the internet way too long, lol. I could understand feeling that way if it was a Desert Fox, a Skystriker, or a FLAGG or Defiant... but it was just a Pogo, they have plenty. I read the thread you linked (all 9 pages) and I'm sorry you had to go through that, part of the reason I detest that place so much. Comparing an Adder to Action Comics #1 is just silly, it's apples and oranges. Saying you single handedly ruined GI Joe collecting because you opened something is lame. The haters just come off as being jealous and snobby. You should not EVER feel guilty for doing what you wanted with your property. I happened to get a great deal, most MISB were going for $50-60 each, and the opened ones for $10-30... I happened to get one MISB for $25... AND I KEPT GETTING OUTBID on the opened ones. I just happened, luckily, to win the MISB one. I wanted to put it together, snap them off the plastic trees, I wanted to apply the decals, I wanted the crisp blueprints, the untouched catalog, etc... I work hard for my money and I really wanted this, so once it was mine, I opened it. It wasn't an ancient Roman tablet, an Egyptian literary work, it's a plastic toy that can be easily found still MISB. Give me break. If the OP really needs to ask, then maybe he isn't ready to open. But in my opinion, he got a complete and minty fresh toy for a good price. He should enjoy it however he likes. If he wants to open it, let him enjoy it... if anyone has a problem, they should have outbid him on eBay.

Sounds harsh, but I totally agree. These MISB vehicles are becoming so scarce because of this "open it and play with it!" sentiment.
As someone who absolutely loves G.I. Joe and the significance of it's history, I really hate seeing these opened. They are so old now that I think we really have to respect them as artifacts of a by-gone era. The vintage MISB vehicle is basically like a time capsule from the 80's. The sad thing is, once you open it....it's too late. It's can't be un-opened. Sure, it may be great fun to open and assemble (I always loved that as a kid), but that means yet another of these rare, historic artifacts from that beloved era is gone forever. I have a Persuader I bought MISB earlier this year. I was tempted to open it, but thought better of it. And man I'm glad I didn't. It feels good to look at my shelf and see that box sitting there in the same condition it did 22 years ago in the store. Some here would say..."yeah but you're just looking at a box". Well, to me there's more meaning behind it than that. Sure, I'm seeing a box, but I know there's an untouched, rare piece of history sitting there and I totally appreciate what it means to me and to the history of the 1980's GI Joe era. Even if I had a Cobra Rat MISB I wouldn't open it. It would just feel wrong to do that. Preserve it man. Don't open it whatever you do. Just wait and eventually you'll find a loose one you'll be happy with. And as time goes by...trust me....You'll grow to appreciate the untouched MISB Avalanche more and more. If you open it, it's too late. That'll be yet another one lost forever. If for nothing else, just for nostalgia's sake and for the sake of knowing you have an item that is soooo rare and special. A lot of people have loose Avalanches. Hardly anybody has a MISB Avalanche....but you do. If you open it, it's no longer all that special anymore. It's just another Avalanche. Sure it's complete, but it's just another Avalanche. But right now, YOU have an incredibly rare piece of history. I would really advise not spoiling what you have there....and what we all have as fans of GI Joe.....seriously. If people wouldn't put so much emphasis on getting a toy to NOT play with it, you would all be able to get an Avalanche, loose, and be happy with it. But it's never enough for anyone to just have their collectibles, they have to find some way to one up someone else. Yeah it's harsh, but it's true. |

This is one of the most insane things I've ever read on the internet. While yeah, this might be worth even more money someday, if it's true that this is "a piece of history", there are a billion more pieces of history as well. Seriously, if GI Joes were just a box with nothing inside of it, would it be worth something in the future? The sad part is it probably would, because there is no different between keeping something MIB and effectively not having anything. Toys were meant to be played with and displayed, and the only reason MIB toys are worth as much as they are is because people who are 100% out of their minds make them worth more.
I find your reply even more insane because you obviously haven't read this thread in it's entirety. As I stated once before in a post above, this has NOTHING to do with money or the vehicle's resale value. Interesting how earlier I already stated this, yet you bring it up once again. I don't play with toys. I'm in my 30's and I no longer feel the urge. Some do, and I respect that but it's not my thing. So that has nothing to do with it. Wanting the Joe collecting world to preserve the remnants of the MIB vehicles we still have left out there has absolutely nothing to do with "one upping" someone else's collection. It has to do with not wanting to see all of these rare, untouched, factory sealed antiques be messed with. You obviously do not understand this perspective, so arguing with you is a completely moot point. And for the record, I only own 1 single MIB vehicle. I don't care about market-value and I don't care about playing with them. I'm just an interested observer, 80's nostalgist, and dedicated GI Joe enthusiast. I simply care about preserving these pieces of history as they were when they sat on store shelves, being drooled over by us kids who were dreaming of receiving them as Christmas presents. To you it may be just a box, but to me it's a something more. It's a Joe with an unpopped cherry and their numbers are dying off quickly. But if you don't get it, then you don't get it and I really can't make you understand so there is no arguing to be done.

Meh. I apologize, I did misunderstand what you were saying. It's late here but that isn't really an excuse... And I can see you point, but if I were you I'd still want to pop that cherry ;) A toy losing it's virginity isn't wrong if it's already married to its owner right? heh
I hear ya. It's like friggin' 4:30 in the morning here. I get so used to being up until about 6:00-6:30 am because I work a street vending hot dog cart on the weekends and don't get home until about 4:30 or 5:00 so my internal clock is all out of whack. But, it's extra money to pay the bills and in this current economy, ya know it helps.

This is why they do it. Even with loose ones even more available they do it simply to annoy other people. People are free to do whatever they want with their collection, and if you were to open it nobody here would even know or care about it unless you decided to run to your computer and start trying to taunt people with different collecting styles than your own. The OP asked for advice and both sides gave their opinion. Hopefully the insight given here will be enough to help him make up his mind.

Hopefully the OP will really think long and hard about this decision put before him, rather than making a rash, quick, impulsive, regretful decision.
Like I said, I have no financial interest in the MIB market and I speak simply as a GI JOE enthusiast. Please just think deeply about this decision and what it means in the big picture, bro.
